Tip: these simple bets often have the best odds out of anything in the casino, but they don't pay as much money as riskier bets. You can also lose more if you're not careful because of how fast and exciting an average craps game is.

About this article

Craps is a fun casino game where players place bets on the table and root for the shooter to roll a winning number with the dice before sevening out. Only one player per round is the shooter, but any player can bet on the table. The dice are passed around the table clockwise after each round so anyone interested in being the shooter gets a turn. At the beginning of a round, the shooter chooses 2 dice and throws them across the table so they hit the back wall. This is called the “come-out roll.” if the shooter rolls a 7 or 11, called a “natural,” they win and get to roll again. If they roll a 2, 3, or 12, they lose but still continue to roll. Once the shooter rolls a 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, or 10, the dealer will mark the “point,” or the rolled number, on the table with a small button. At this point, the shooter continues to roll until they roll the point number again or a 7. If they roll the point number, they win. If they roll a 7, they seven out and the round is over. To bet in craps, players can place a bet on the “pass” or “don’t pass” line at any time as long as a point hasn’t been established for that round. The shooter for that round must place a bet on either the “pass” or “don’t pass” line. If a player bets on the “pass” line, they win if the shooter rolls a natural or rolls the point before sevening out. If they place a bet on the “don’t pass” line, they win if the shooter rolls a 2 or 3 or sevens out before rolling the point. If the shooter rolls a 12, it’s a push for any bets on the “don’t pass” line, and nothing happens. Once the point has been established, players can bet on the “come” and “don’t come” spaces. If the shooter rolls a natural on their next roll, the “come” bet wins. If the shooter rolls a 2, 3, or 12, it loses. If they roll a 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, or 10, that number becomes the “come point,” and players who bet on the “come” space win if the shooter rolls the come point before sevening out. If the shooter rolls a 2 or 3 or sevens out, the “don’t come” space wins. If the shooter rolls a 12, it’s a push. There are also one-roll spaces that players can place bets on. For example, players can bet on the “any craps” space on the table. If the shooter gets a 2, 3, or 12 on their next roll, players who bet on the “any craps” space win. Players can also make place bets once the point has been established by betting on the 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, and 10 spaces. If one of those numbers comes up before the shooter sevens out, any players who bet on it win. Players can also bet on the “field” space. If the next roll is a 2, 3, 4, 9, 10, 11, or 12, they win. Finally, players can bet on the “big 6” and “big 8” spaces. If the shooter rolls a 6 or 8 before sevening out, players who bet on the corresponding space win. Once the shooter sevens out, the round is over and the dice are passed to the next player. Then, a new round of betting and rolling starts. To learn more about the lingo of the game or your odds of winning, keep reading!

HOW TO SHOOT DICE

HOW TO SHOOT DICE: PREPARATION WORK

CRAPS PASS LINE RULES FOR SHOOTING DICE

The dice are passed around the live table depending on the outcome of the pass line bet.

There are dozens of other bets available, but the pass line is fundamental to craps play.

It's a multiroll wager that begins with a "comeout roll." before the comeout, players who want to bet on pass place chips directly in front of them in the area marked "pass line."

The shooter is required to make a pass bet. If you do not want to bet on pass, the dice go to the next shooter.

On the comeout roll, if the roll is 7 or 11, pass bettors win. If the roll is 2, 3 or 12 - the numbers designated as "craps" - pass bettors lose.

If the comeout roll is 5. 6. 7, 8, 9 or 10. That number is designated as the "point." the dealer flips a plastic disc to the side labeled "on," and places it in the point number's box on the table.

Now the shooter's goal changes. To win, he must roll that point number again before rolling a 7. If he repeats the point number, all pass bettors win, but if he first rolls a 7, all pass bettors lose.

Once the point is established, no other numbers but 7 and the point matter in deciding the pass bet. Other numbers could decide other bets you and other players make, but the outcome of the pass bet is down to the shooter, the point number and 7.

Losing by rolling a 7 after a point has been established is called "sevening out." it's only after the shooter sevens out that the dice pass to a new shooter. If the shooter rolls a loser 2, 3 or 12 on the comeout, he keeps shooting.

Dice and Roll, casino game where you roll dice.
Let's try a sequence on how to shoot dice.

  1. On the comeout roll, the shooter rolls a 7. Pass bettors win.

  2. The next roll is another comeout. The shooter rolls a 5, which becomes a
    point.

  3. The next four rolls are 11, 8, 4 and 6. None of those matter on the pass
bet. You'll see some payoffs on winning bets and chips collected by the
dealer on losers, but those are on different wagers that don't affect the
    pass bet.

  4. The shooter rolls a 5. Pass bettors win.

  5. Because the pass bet has been decided, the next roll is a comeout to
    start a new pass sequence.

  6. The shooter rolls a 3 on the comeout. Pass bettors lose, but the shooter
keeps rolling because he did not seven out.

  7. Again, the next roll is a comeout. The shooter rolls an 8, and that
    becomes the point.

  8. The shooter rolls a 7. Pass bettors lose. Now the shooter has sevened
out, and the dice pass clockwise around the table to the next shooter

LEARN HOW OTHER BETS WORK

Knowing the pass bet is essential, because shooters must bet pass and it helps determine whose turn it is to shoot.

But if you're going to be really comfortable at a craps table, you should know what's going on around you.

The ultimate craps guide describes other wagers in detail, but here are a few to focus on:

Dice and Roll, casino game where you roll dice.

FREE ODDS

Once the point is established, you may back your pass or come bet with an odds bet. The free odds are paid at true odds, meaning there is no house edge on that portion of your bet.

DON'T PASS/DON'T COME

These are the near opposites of pass and come. Instead of winning when the shooter repeats a point number before rolling a 7, don't bettors win when the 7 comes first.

One point of difference is that while pass and come bettors lose when the comeout is 2, 3 or 12, don't bettors win only on 2 or 3, while a comeout roll of 12 is a push.

LAY ODDS

Just as pass/come bettors may back their bets with free odds, don't bettors may lay the odds, spotting the house true odds of winning. Again, these are paid at true odds and there is no house edge.

PLACE BETS

These are multiroll bets that skip the comeout. If you place 6, for example, you win if the shooter rolls a 6, but lose if a 7 comes first. No other numbers matter.

The lowest house edge comes if you place 6 or 8. Other numbers have higher edges.

These are some of the best bets at craps and are described in detail, along with other wagers and their house edges, elsewhere in the guide.

KNOW YOUR VOCABULARY AS A DICE SHOOTER

Craps practically has a language of its own, especially if you get into the slang some dealers use to call out different dice combinations.

You'll often hear "yo-leven," or sometimes just "yo," for 11, but from some dealers you might also hear "six-five, no jive."

You'll often hear "yo-leven," or sometimes just "yo," for 11, but from some dealers you might also hear "six-five, no jive."

You can pick up the slang as you go along, but there are a few normal terms you should know before you take your turn with the dice.

  1. Shooter: the player whose turn it is to roll the dice.

  2. Comeout: the initial roll of the pass sequence. The dealer usually willv alert the table that the next roll is a comeout by calling, "coming out," or in the case of a change of shooter, "new shooter coming out."

  3. Pass: an area between two lines that extend all around the table is called the "pass line." A bet placed in that area is a pass bet, as described earlier in this chapter. If the shooter makes a point and pass bettors win, the shooter is said to have made a pass.

  4. Craps: rolls of 2, 3 or 12 are called "craps" and are losers on the pass line if rolled on the comeout.

  5. The point: the number the shooter must roll before 7 to make a pass. That's determined if the comeout roll is 4, 5, 6, 8, 9 or 10 -- that number is designated as teh point.

  6. Seven out: losing a pass bet by rolling a 7 before repeating the point.

HOW TO SHOOT DICE IN THE CASINO

Once you have the basic knowledge of the game and are ready to try shooting dice in a casino, there are procedures to follow:

Dice and Roll, casino game where you roll dice.
BECOMING THE SHOOTER

Once you take your place at the table, the dice will come to you in your turn.

When a shooter sevens out, the dice are offered to the next player clockwise around the table. When that player sevens out, the dice go to the next player, and so on around the table.

When it is your turn, the stickman will push several dice toward you - the stickman is one of the crew that runs the game. He's easy to spot because he has a large stick, curved at the end so he can hook the dice after each roll and bring them back to the shooter.

You may pick up dice and choose which two you want to shoot. The dice are identical to manufacturer's specification, but some players just think some dice feel luckier than others.

ROLLING THE DICE

Before shooting dice, you must make a bet on the pass line. When you get the go-ahead to roll, you must roll toward the end of the table that is farther away from you.

The casino wants to make sure rolls are as random as possible. As long random rolls bring up dice combinations in normal proportions, the odds of the game will hold up and the house will make money.

Dice and Roll, casino game where you roll dice.

To insure random rolls, casinos take several measures:

  1. You, as the shooter, must loft the dice into the air. If the boxman, who is the chief of the crew operating the game, does not see the dice in an arc above the table, he can call no roll. In that case, your roll does not count, win or lose, and you must roll again.

  2. On your roll, the dice must hit the back wall at the end of the table. If the dice fall short of hitting the back wall, the boxman can call no roll.

  3. The table walls usually have pyramid-shaped bumps, designed so that instead of the dice bouncing off them in a predictable manner, they bounce at angles to randomize the roll.

  4. The padding under the felt on the table surface varies from casino to casino. A surface that creates more bounce on the roll helps to randomize results.

Dice and Roll, casino game where you roll dice.
Keeping all that in mind, there are several ways shooters go about the physical roll of the dice:

  1. Some shooters wrap their full hand around the dice, then give a backhand roll, with the back of their hand facing the wall toward which they're shooting.

  2. Some move the dice in their hand, cradling them among their thumb, index finger and middle finger and fling the dice toward the end.

  3. But the method favored by many is to put the dice side-by-side, square against each other, then pick up with the thumb and middle finger along the line between the dice, so the thumb touches both dice on one side and the middle finger touches both dice on the other. They then swing their full arm as a pendulum and release the dice in an arc.

HOW TO SHOOT DICE: YOUR GOAL AS SHOOTER

You must obey all the table rules. You must put sufficient arc on your roll to satisfy the boxman and your roll must hit the back wall.

However, hot rolls that make money for players usually involve a streak in which the shooter is rolling fewer 7s than usual. Fewer 7s mean more points made before seven-out.

Dice and Roll, casino game where you roll dice.
You can win with 7s on comeout rolls, but for players who back their pass bets with free odds, the big wins come by making the points. And you can't make the points when the dice keep landing on 7.

In the good times, you seem to get in a rhythm in which the point numbers are rolling and the 7s are few and far between. The question craps players have been asking themselves for ages is whether there's anything they can do to make the good times come more often.

Whether you're wagering on the pass line alone or on other bets, too, it doesn't take much deviation from the norm to swing the house edge in favor of players.

Take the place bets on 6 or 8, as described above. When 7s occur an average of once every six rolls, as they do in a random game, the house has a 1.52 percent edge -- for every $100 wagered, the house expects to keep $1.52.

But what if 7s don't come up once every six rolls? What if the shooter has a method that will depress 7s so they come up less often?

Dr. Don catlin, a retired professor of mathematics and statistics, took on that problem a few years ago. Catlin calculated that a shooter reaches the turning point, taking a slight edge when he can depress the frequency of 7s to 1 in 6.1428. Depress the frequency to 1 in 7, and the players betting 6 and/or 8 take a whopping 8.333 percent edge over the house. That the gap from 1 in 6 rolls to 1 in 6.1428 is narrow doesn't make it easy. But those who practice dice control say they can get there.

HOW TO SHOOT DICE: DICE CONTROL

I first learned of dice control from frank scoblete, author of many best-selling books on casinos games including "golden touch dice control revolution" and "cutting edge craps." famed blackjack expert stanford wong also took up the dice control question in his book, "wong on dice."

At its core, dice control is not about trying to roll specific numbers. No one claims to be able to step up to the table to roll 6s at will, or any other number.

Most of the emphasis is on decreasing the proportion of 7s once a point has been established. Some players going to the next level also try to increase the proportion of 7s on the comeout, so they win with more 7s on the comeout and also with fewer 7s after there's a point.

The method for doing so sounds easy, but please keep in mind this is a physical skill. Like other physical skills such as shooting free throws in basketball, bowling or shooting billiards, dice control requires a great deal of practice and muscle memory.

Not everyone who tries it will be able to put it into practice and get an edge over the house. Some players -- perhaps even most players -- will find they're never able to cross the bridge from random results.

Even those who are both skilled enough and practiced enough to control successfully will find there are days they're just out of rhythm. On such days, it's best to just walk away from the table.

DICE CONTROL KEY POINTS

  1. Start by setting the dice. The starting point for most dice controllers is to set them so both dice have a 3 face on top, and to set themselves so the diagonal lines formed by the three spots align in the same direction on both dice.

It isn't necessary to have the 3s face up, but dice controllers like to have both dice show the same number. Starting with the dice showing 3s is common among craps players and doesn't set off any alarms among the crew that the shooter might be a dice controller.

However, no one wants to wait for the shooter to set the dice. So you need to learn to find the dice faces you want on top quickly. Time is money in a casino, and the crew won't let you slow down the game.

  • Pick up the dice between thumb and forefinger.

  • Swing your arm in a pendulum motion and release: shoot the dice in a soft arc. You do not want to put any spin on the dice. The fewer rotations they make in the air, the better. The dice also should stay tight, close together in their arc. The more separation between them after you release, the more likely it is they will take random bounces in different directions when they land.

  • The dice must hit the back wall and bounce on the table. However, your goal in releasing the dice softly and with rotation minimized is to take some of the randomizing factors out of the roll.

That means you want the dice to stop quickly and not bounce multiple times. The ideal roll will softly hit the back of the wall, bounce on the table surface once and come to a halt.

    PRACTICING AT HOME

In theory, it all sounds easy enough: swing your arm in a pendulum and release the dice gently so they bounce a minimum number of times.

In practice, it's a difficult physical skill that takes time to master. Dice control experts suggest you set aside up to an hour a day to practice your roll, and to practice every day. Given all the time and repetition it takes, you don't want to make casino play all your practice time. When you're playing in a casino, you have money on the line. Besides, when you're waiting for other shooters, you're not spending all that much time practicing your roll.

Dice and Roll, casino game where you roll dice.
To get in enough practice time without the risk of big losing sessions, there are several methods you can use at home.

    BUY A REGULATION TABLE

The method that most closely simulates casino conditions is to buy a regulation craps table and practice on that. There are several problems with that method. For one thing, in some jurisdictions, private ownership of gambling equipment is illegal. Even where legal, craps tables are expensive and take up a lot of space.

Only a few dedicated players with money to spend and plenty of space in their houses can go so far as to install a regulation table.

BUY OR BUILD A PRACTICE BOX

This is much easier on both space and your budget than trying to by a full table. Online searches can lead you to sites that will sell you practice rigs for a few hundred dollars, but also can find plans to build your own, if you're handy with the tools.

Commercially available practice rigs are small, about three feet wide by three feet deep, at regulation height, with foldable legs for easy storage. The back wall has regulation pyramids, and the surface has padded felt, usually about an inch and a half thick, to simulate the same conditions you'd find in a casino.

It's up to you to stand a normal distance away, take your normal stance for rolling the device, then take that pendulum swing and aim to have the dice softly hit that back wall.

In a pinch, just practice your roll throwing into any available surface. You can roll dice onto a bed or sofa, or into a dresser drawer. These won't give you realistic bounces so you get no accurate feedback from the numbers you roll. The idea is just to build muscle memory, to keep yourself in the habit of giving your arm that pendulum swing.

    DICE CONTROL CONCLUSION

There are a few key points everyone who wants to try dice control should keep in mind.

    1. Dice and Roll, casino game where you roll dice.
Attempting to control the dice is not for everyone, and it will not automatically make you a winner. Most players will wind up with random results and still face the same house edge.

    2. For those who do move forward with dice control, it's important to practice, practice, practice. Consistently rolling the dice with the same motion time after time is a physical skill, and it's easy to fall out of rhythm if you don't keep up the homework.

    3. Though a select few players claim to be able to increase the frequency of certain numbers, the basic aim of dice control is to decrease the frequency of 7s, leading to more passes.

    4. Learning dice control can be as inexpensive or expensive as you like, depending on your wants and needs.

You can practice the pendulum roll on your own with homemade equipment, or you can spend hundreds, even thousands of dollars on commercial practice rigs, seminars, private lessons and more.

Small stakes players or those who play infrequently will be best served by staying on the inexpensive side. There's no point in
spending more on practice tools than you'll actually wager in the casino.

Bigger players might find it worthwhile to explore their options, whether through the books by scoblete and wong or through
    websites devoted to dice control.

Do keep in mind that dice control is no cure-all. Not everyone can do it, and some don't even believe it's possible. If you do decide to try, then practice regularly. Practice may not make perfect, but it certainly takes lots of practice to get better

Craps rules – how to play craps

If you’re new to craps, the game may seem a bit complicated and pretty hectic – there is a lot of action happening all at once as craps bets can be made at any point during a round. Although you can play craps knowing only a couple of bets, you can have more fun and change things up a bit when you know all the betting possibilities available to you and how and when to place them. By going through the craps rules and the game bet by bet you’ll soon know how to play craps like a pro and be ready to play this exciting online casino classic.

Craps rules - the basics of how to play craps

In online craps played at both desktop and mobile casinos, and in live games too for that matter, gamblers place wagers on the outcome of the roll of the dice. Two six-sided dice are used in the game. The player who throws the dice is called “the shooter,” and if you play in a live casino, every player at the table can have the opportunity to roll. The dice are passed counter clockwise after each new round.

When a new round of craps begins the following takes place:

    1) the shooter selects two dice to roll.

    2) the shooter must make a pass line bet – either on the pass or don't pass line (we’ll soon go through what that means). Other players at the table also make bets.

    3) the shooter begins the round by rolling the dice off the opposite wall of the table. The shooter's first roll is known as the come-out roll.

    The come-out roll

As we said, the shooter has to make either a pass bet or a don’t pass bet before the first roll – the come-out roll. If the come-out roll is a 7 or 11, then the pass bet wins and the don't pass bets lose. This scenario ends the round. If the come-out roll is a 2, 3 or 12, also known as “craps,” the pass line loses and the don't pass line either wins (in some casinos 12 results in a tie and the bet is returned to the player.) this also ends the round.

If the come-out roll is a 4, 5, 6, 8, 9 or 10, then that specific number becomes the player's point. The dealers at the table then place a puck on top of that specific number on the table. The shooter continues to roll the dice until he or she rolls the point number 7. If the point number is rolled, then pass line bettors win and don't pass bettors lose. If a 7 is rolled, pass line bets lose and don't pass bets win.

How to play craps - popular bets

Even though there are many bets to choose from, once you have to knowledge of how to play craps popular bets you can start playing practically immediately until you get the hang of the game.

Dice and Roll, casino game where you roll dice.

Pass line: pass line bets are the easiest craps bets to make. When you wager on the pass line, you are betting that either a 7 or an 11 will be the result of the come-out roll. If a shooter rolls a 7 or 11 on the come-out roll, you double your money.

If the shooter rolls a 4, 5, 6, 8, 9 or 10 instead, then a point is established. When you bet the pass line, you want that point number to be rolled again, (before the shooter rolls a 7). If the shooter does hit the number before rolling a 7, your pass line bet is doubled.

If the shooter rolls a 2, 3 or 12 (or craps) on the come-out roll, then you lose your pass line bet. If a point is established and a 7 is rolled before that point value, this also results in a lost pass line bet.

Don't pass line: don't pass bets are the opposite of pass line bets. When you make a don't pass bet you are basically betting against the shooter. You want the shooter to crap out (roll a 2, 3 or 12) on the come-out roll. If a point is established on the come-out roll, then your goal as a don't pass bettor is to have the shooter roll a 7 before hitting their established number.

Come bets: A come bet is like a pass line bet but it can be made at any time after the point has been made. If a shooter rolls a 7 or 11 after a come bet is made, the come bet wins. If the shooter rolls a 2, 3, or 12 after a come bet has been made, the come bet loses.

If the shooter rolls any other number that number becomes your own point number and if that number is rolled before the shooter rolls a 7, then the come bet wins. If the 7 is rolled before the number, the come bet loses. This bet pays even money.

Don't come bets: this is the opposite of the come bet. It’s also made at any time after the point has been made. Don't come bets win if a shooter rolls a 2 or a 3 after a point has been established (a 12 results in a tie). If any other number is rolled that becomes your point number, then a seven must be rolled before that number is repeated again in order for the don't come bet to win.

Odds bets: this is a side bet which can only be placed once you have already made a pass, don’t pass, come, or don’t come bet. You will not see this marked on the table, but you make it by placing chips directly behind your original bet. You ‘take odds’ when you have already made a pass or come bet, and you ‘lay odds’ when you have made a don’t pass or don’t come bet.

Depending on what your original bet is, you are taking/laying odds on whether the point number or 7 will be rolled first. For example if you have placed a pass bet and you take odds, you win the bet if the point number is rolled before the 7. If your original bet wins, your odds bet also wins. The odds bet can be made at any time, removed at any time, and you can increase or decrease the amount of the bet as well at any point during the game.

There is also a limit for bets to amount to 2-3 times the original bet. If you have made a $20 bet on the don’t come bet, you can lay odds up to $40 for 2 times the original bet, or $60 for 3 times the original bet, depending on the casino.

    Odds pay 2 to 1 for points 4 and 10, 3 to 2 for points 2 and 9, and 6 to 5 for points 6 and 8.

How to play craps - single-roll bets

Once you leave how to play craps single-roll bets they can be made whenever you want during a round and are placed in the area of the craps layout where you see images of dice combinations, as shown in the image below. You should always keep in mind that these bets offers a quite hefty house edge and they are not recommended by any craps experts. By learning how to play craps single-roll bets you can use them sparingly throughout a game for a bit of added thrill.

    Proposition bets

These bets are a group of single roll bets found together on the table. Proposition bets tends to have a very high house edge so you should only really play them once in a while when you want some action as you wait for your standing bets.

Three (ace deuce): wins if the shooter rolls a 3 and pays 15 to 1.

Any 7 (big red): wins if the shooter rolls a 7 and pays 4 to 1.

Any craps (three way): wins if the shooter rolls a 2, 3 or 12 and pays 7 to 1 for each number.

Two craps or aces (snake eyes): wins if the shooter rolls a 2 and pays 30 to 1.

Twelve craps (boxcars or midnight): wins if the shooter rolls a 12 and pays 30 to 1.

Eleven (yo): wins if shooter rolls an 11 and pays 15 to 1. This is called a yo instead of eleven to avoid confusion as eleven sounds a lot like seven.

Craps and eleven (C&E): this bet is occasionally marked on the side of the proposition bets boxes on the table as C&E. There are 16 circles marked with a C or E to fit all the 16 players at the craps table. This bet adds the eleven to the any craps bet so you win if an eleven is rolled, or if one of the any craps numbers are rolled. The payout is 7:1 if any craps numbers 12,3,or 2 are rolled, and 15:1 if the eleven is rolled. The house edge overall is 11.11%. As 50% of your bet is on each the any craps and eleven, you will lose half your original bet as one will always lose out.

Horn (2,3,11 or 12): the horn bet wagers on either the 2,3,11 or 12 being rolled on the next roll of the dice. This bet is found in the middle of the table with the proposition bets. Wagers are split between each number. For example if you wager $8, then $2 will go on each number. If one of the numbers is rolled then the 2 and 12 pay 30 to 1, and then 3 and 11 pay 15 to 1. Then difference between the horn bet and the C&E bet is that all numbers have their own distinct payoffs, whilst the any craps numbers have a combined payout of 7:1.

Horn high bets: you are able to double your bet on one of the horn bet numbers by making one of the horn numbers a horn high number. When you place bets in $5 multiples it makes this bet easier to make so you can designate one unit for each number and an extra unit on one of them. For example if you place a horn high on the 11, $2 will be placed on the 11, and $1 on each the 2,3 and 12. If the 11 is rolled you get paid twice the payout minus three dollars of your losing bets. You have to indicate which number you want as the high number when you place the horn bet. If one of the other numbers is rolled and not your high number you will get paid the single payout minus the $4.

World or whirl bet: you will not find this bet on the craps table but many players like to place this bet. This is a combination of the horn and any seven bet making it five individual bets, and it’s made in multiples of $5 like the horn high bet to make it easier. If the shooter rolls a 7 for example, then that bet wins and the other four lose. The payout for the 7 is 4:1 and the others are the same as the horn bet.

    Playing craps in las vegas

Dice and Roll, casino game where you roll dice.

Craps is a las vegas casino dice game played inside a large sunken table. Craps can be a complicated game to understand because of the different betting options. In craps, players wager money against the casino on the outcome of one roll, or of a series of rolls of two red dice.

Craps is a game played by 1 or more players. It is played with a set of two perfectly balance red dice. In las vegas casinos, there are no seats around the table because the game is played standing up. Players take turns rolling two dice.

Most las vegas crap tables usually operate with four employees: the boxman, two dealers, and a stickman.
Boxman: sits at the center of the layout and drops all currency into the money box. He directs the game and watches everything.
Dealers: stand on each side of the boxman. It is the dealer who pays off the winning wagers and collects the player's losses. Dealers also may change when you play.
Stickman: stands in the center of the player's side of the table. He's responsible for handling the dice and all the proposition bets.
Shooter: the player who is rolling the dice is the shooter.

    Getting started with craps

Buying chips: just place the money in front of the dealer and say "change." the dealer will hand the money to the boxman who counts it, and tells the dealer the amount. The dealer will then place an equivalent amount of chips on the layout directly in front of you. Take the chips off the table layout and place them in the groove provided on the table railing.

Come out: place a bet on the pass line section of the board after the hockey puck is switched to OFF by the dealer(stickman). The shooter will then make a "come-out roll" by tossing both dice from one of the short ends of the table to the other, making sure that both dice hit the opposite side wall of the table. Player wins if a natural 7 or 11 appears, and loses if a crap 2, 3, or 12 appears. Any other number (4, 5, 6, 8, 9, or 10) becomes the pass line point.

Note: the game is played in rounds, with the first roll of a new round called the "come-out roll."

    Pass line

The pass line is the place on the layout where you put your chips to bet on the first roll or the come out roll. A pass line bet wins even money. Once the pass line point has been established, if the total of the two dice is 7 or 11, you win, and your chips double. This is called a 'win' or a 'natural'. If the shooter rolls any other number (4, 5, 6, 8, 9, or 10) on the come-out roll, this number becomes what is called the point and then you enter the point round. However if you roll a 2, 3 or 12, you lose and your chips are taken away. This is called 'craps' and ends the round immediately.

In the point round, the shooter will re-roll the dice continuously and try to roll the same number again before rolling a 7. If the shooter rolls the point again, the round ends and the game starts over with the same shooter rolling another come-out roll. If the shooter rolls a 7 instead of the point, this is called a 'seven-out,' the round ends, and the dice pass to the next player to the left, who becomes the new shooter.

    Don't pass line

This is the opposite of the pass line bet. With the "don't pass line" wager, you lose on the "come out" roll if the shooter rolls a 7 or 11. You win on a 2 or 3 (12 is a tie). Once a point is established, you lose if the point is thrown and win if a 7 rolls.

When 4, 5, 6, 8, 9 or 10 rolls, it is the point. You are betting that 7 will be rolled before the point. This bet must be placed before the come out roll, but may be removed or decreased after a point is established, however, it may not be replaced or increased after such removal or reduction.

    Come bets

This is a bet that can be made anytime after the first roll when a shooter has a point to make. You win on a 7 or 11 and lose on a 2, 3 or 12 on the roll immediately following placement of the bet. Any other number becomes your "come point" and your bet will be moved to that number. If your point rolls before 7, you win. If 7 rolls before your point, you lose.

    Don't come bets

Opposite of come bets. This is also a bet that can be made anytime after the first roll when a shooter has a point to make. You win if the next roll is 2 or 3 (12 is a tie), and lose if 7 or 11 roll immediately following placement of the bet. When 12 is rolled, it is a stand-off. When 4, 5, 6, 8, 9 or 10 rolls, it is your point. You are betting that 7 will be rolled before the point. When a point is established, the bet will be placed behind that number.

The odds bet can be taken once a point is made on the first roll or a come point on a succeeding roll. You win if the point or come points are made before a 7.

Dice and Roll, casino game where you roll dice.

    Place bets

With place bets you have to wait for the shooter to make a point and then you may make a "place bet" on numbers 4, 5, 6, 8, 9 and 10. If the shooter rolls any of these numbers before a 7, you win. If 7 rolls before your number, you lose.

    Big 6 & 8

A bet you can make any time that pays even money when 6 or 8 is rolled.

    Field bets

Field bets are one roll bets you can make at any time. With field bets, you win on 3, 4, 9, 10 and 11. You win 2 to 1 on 2. And you win 3 to 1 on 12. You lose on 5, 6, 7, or 8.

    Proposition bets

Proposition bets can be found in the center of the table and are one roll bets

    Hard ways

With a hardway bet, you are betting that the shooter rolls a pair. Hard ways win if the dice roll as a pair and lose if a 7 rolls. There are four "hard way" combinations; hard 4 (two 2's), hard 6 (two 3's), hard 8 (two 4's) and hard 10 (two 5's). You bet the combination you want at any time. For example, if you bet the two 3's (or hard way 6), you win when that comes up before a 7 or an easy way 6 (5 and 1 or 4 and 2). "hard ways" pay high odds. You can also bet any pair (hard way) for one roll only; this pays 30 to 1. Make "hard way" bets at any time.

Most players' strategies center around knowing which bets to place and which bets to avoid. Most wining players avoid all bets except for the pass line and come bets and certain place bets(6 or 8), leaving the field, proposition, big 6 and big 8 bets to those pulled in by the stickperson.

Remember, you want a 7 or 11 on the come out roll. If 7 or 11 appear you win, if 2, 3, or 12 are rolled you lose.
Once a point is established, you can't pick up your bet, you have to wait until the player sevens out.
Listen to the stickman. He calls the game, and everything he says is important. Don't hesitate to ask the stickman for more information on proposition bets.

Craps house advantage and expected lose

10 fun dice games for kids and families

Playing games are a great way to connect as a family, I love playing dice games with kids because they are quick, easy, and help bring in a little (or a lot) of math.

Dice games are simple fun, great for on-the-go play, and are great for a rainy day when you are stuck inside.

Here are some of my favorite dice games- some are board games and some just use dice and score sheets. So get your dice and let’s go!

Dice and Roll, casino game where you roll dice.

10 dice games for kids- for fun and learning!

    Tenzi

Tenzi is basically a set of 10 dice in each of 4 different colors. The goal of basic tenzi is to roll the dice and be the first to get all 10 dice the same number.

There are an infinite number of ways to play tenzi:

    • Choose a number and be the first to get all 10 dice that number

    • Be the first to get all the dice in pairs

    • Be the first to stack all 10 dice in a tower

    • Be the first to make all 10 dice add up to 20

    • And so on….

You can purchase 77 ways to play tenzi, or just come up with your own. It can be as easy or as challenging as you wish!

We once played where we had to roll 2 yahtzees (5 of one number in one roll). Now, that took a loooonng time!

    Qwixx

Qwixx is a color coded dice game that comes with 2 white dice, a yellow, red, green and blue dice. The concept and scoring is simple- so kids as young as 5 of so can play.

Qwixx is a math based game- so it will help with addition skills practice. To play you roll all six dice and try to mark off the sums of certain colored dice on the scoring sheet. The more scores you can mark off before the game ends the higher your score!

If you already have enough dice you can just get the scoring sheets.

Dice and Roll, casino game where you roll dice.

    Yahtzee

Yahtzee is a classic dice game and the first one I ever remember playing.

What I love most about yahtzee is that it’s a dice game for ALL generations. I can play with my kids, my mom and my grandmother and we all have fun- so it’s a great way to connect together.

You can buy a set, or just gather up 5 dice and get some score sheets.

    Flash!

Flash is a lightning fast dice game that uses visual perception math skills to win the game.

It can be played with 2-6 players- and since there’s no real strategy- there’s an even playing field no matter the age of the player.

The game comes with 36 dice, scoring chips, and a scoring pad.

    Knockout

Knockout is one of my favorite math-based dice games for kids. All you need is 2 dice and a dry erase board and you can help your kid practice their addition facts under the guise of a fun game!

Use either standard 6 sided dice or up the challenge and use 12 sided dice!

Get the full directions on how to play knockout

    Farkle

Farkle is a scored dice game that requires you to roll a 1, 5 or a special combination like 3 of a kind, 3 pairs, or a straight.

You can continue to roll on your turn as long as you have rolled at least one scoring die. You can choose to stop and keep your points at any time, or keep rolling and take the chance of getting more.

First player to make it to 10,000 points wins!

Different versions of farkle seem to have different rules and scoring- but the basic gist is the same. You can buy a farkle set, or simply gather up 6 dice and follow these rules.

Dice and Roll, casino game where you roll dice.

    Yamslam

Yamslam is similar to yahtzee, but you keep score using chips instead of on paper. It’s fast paced and easy to play. According to the company:

“let the five dice roll you to a win with yam slam! Calculated chances and strategic choices will place the odds in your favor. After each roll, choose the dice that will get you the best combination. Each combination is worth a different point value and has only 4 chips, so get the best ones before they run out. Race your friends to the special bonuses and keep the suspense rolling until the end with yam slam.”

Its mostly a game of chance, so all ages can roll the dice and play and have a chance at winning.

    UNO dice

UNO is one of my favorite card games. Combine that with my love of dice games and you get UNO dice!

UNO dice is a 2 player game that comes with dice that you roll and try to match by color or number- just like classic UNO. Get rid of your dice first- and you win!

    Dragonwood

I featured dragonwood in my 10 best family board game too, but since it’s a favorite and also a dice game, I will feature it here as well.

Dragonwood is a card and dice game where you collect cards and use them to earn chances to roll the dice and capture fun woodland creatures. The more you capture the higher your points. Capture the dragons to end the game!

Pig is a fast dice game of chance. All you need to play is 2 players (or more….) and 1 die.

To play pig, a player rolls the dice over and over. The goal is to get as many points as possible- by adding up the face value of the rolls. But watch out- if you roll a 1 your turn is over and you lose all of the points from that roll.

Keep rolling and chance losing your points- or play it safe and pass the die to the next player and keep all the points you rolled.

The first player to reach 100 points wins.

The 2 dice version of pig is even better than the 1 die version. For the 2 dice version, the differences are:

    A. You add the numbers on the top faces of both dice (of course).
    B. If you have just one die with a 1 on the top face, you lose the points you’ve gained in that turn sending you to the score you had at the beginning of the turn, and your turn ends.
    C. If you roll “snake eyes” (two ones), you lose all of your points sending your score back to zero, and your turn ends.

My friends and I added a few other quirks to make it more fun (or evil):

    D. If you rolled doubles, you had to roll again.
    E. If your score for the turn was a double (11, 22, 33, etc.), you had to roll again.
    F. If your overall score–the score you had going into the turn plus the points you’d rolled in the turn thus far–was a double, you had to roll again.
    G. You had to win by hitting the target score, usually 100, exactly, so any roll which brought your overall score to 97 or 98–impossible in this game to throw a 2 or 3 total for one throw–also sent your score for that turn back and ended your turn.

Surprisingly it didn’t take long to get used to those extra rules and the required calculations made it more fun for us.

Great list! When I first saw pig, I thought you meant pass the pig, which is not strictly a dice game, but it kind of plays like one! I also really enjoy rory’s story cubes and zombie dice. They’re both imaginative, affordable, and fun!

So, let's see, what we have: in dice and roll, you will have a classic slot machine with plenty of fruits, stars and 7s, which are the symbols of games played on land based and on online casinos alike by aficionados of these perennial slots. The rolling of the dice brings luck or loss, and the symbols reward you or retain their value. It depends on your luck in this game, in free play, so strive to grab at casino game where you roll dice
