Another steve wynn creation, bellagio, which is owned by MGM resorts (NYSE:MGM) comes in second in profitability but is over $100 million behind wynn las vegas.

What's incredible about wynn las vegas is that it isn't reliant strictly on high rollers sitting at gaming tables for most of its revenue. Non-gaming activities accounted for 67% of the company's $1.66 billion in revenue in the last year, dominated by food and beverage revenue of $490 million. Day and nightclubs operations are also included in that figure and add over $150 million in revenue for wynn las vegas, as I highlighted last year. Rooms generated another $403.3 million and entertainment venues like le reve generated $211.5 million.
Where wynn outshines competitors
not only does wynn las vegas make more than any other resort on nightclubs, it does everything just a little better than competitors. You can see below that it commands higher daily room rates than venetian and palazzo and nearly double MGM grand. Table game and slot win per unit is also higher. MGM resorts and caesars entertainment don't break down table and slot play per casino but we can assume they generate less than wynn given the lower EBITDA.

Gifted children and the socialization process – at home and at school

Imagine a world in which you are forced to spend six hours a day, five days a week, for ten months, with just a couple of weeks off, in a room full of twelve-year-olds. Imagine that you are expected to interact “appropriately” with those twelve-year-olds, and if you don’t, you are seen as someone lacking social skills..
Imagine that you had tried to interact with the twelve-year-olds, but they didn’t get your jokes. They weren’t interested in the issues that you find compelling. In fact, half of the time, they had little idea of what you were even talking about.
You decide that you will be happier if you stop trying. The room leader notices that you have withdrawn, and decides that you might need some counseling. Of course, counseling may not be necessary, but one thing is certain: you need to spend more time with those twelve-year-olds. Eventually, you’ll become mature enough to get along with them.
No one seems to care that outside of that room, you have absolutely no problem interacting with your true peers – other adults. In fact, you have some good friends and get along with them quite well.
Welcome to the world of many highly gifted children in public school. Compounding the problem is the fact the academic environment is often not sufficiently challenging, which can lead to other behavior problems, which are also seen as signs of immaturity. To provide a more challenging environment for their children, many parents choose to homeschool, but face strong criticism and opposition from others due to the widespread belief that homeschooling does not provide sufficient opportunities for socialization.
What does socialization mean?
We all think we know what “socialization” means, but different people have different meanings in mind when they refer to socialization. Richard medlin (2000) explains these different meanings:
“some people mean social activity: giving children the chance to play with friends and participate in traditional extracurricular activities like sports, school plays, and the senior prom. Others mean social influence: teaching children to conform to majority norms. And some mean social exposure: introducing children to the culture and values of different groups of people” (p. 107).
However, kevin durkin (1995) explains socialization as “the process whereby people acquire the rules of behavior and systems of beliefs and attitudes that equip a person to function effectively as members of a particular society” (p. 614). More simply put, it is through the socialization process that we learn how to be a functioning member of society. To be a functioning member of society, we need to learn how to behave, how to interact with others in society, and we need to learn the acceptable beliefs and attitudes of the society.
The popular view today is that children cannot be properly socialized unless they attend school and that homeschooling can harm the socialization process of children. However, not only is that view wrong, the exact opposite is true for many gifted children. It is the public school experience that can harm them.
Homeschooled children do not lack social skills
School officials seem to believe that the only way children can be properly socialized is by attending school, where they can be taught social skills along with other children of the same age. That means that homeschooled children cannot possibly learn proper social skills, which explains the negative attitudes school officials have toward homeschooling. Medlin (2000) describes some of these negative attitudes held by both school psychologists and superintendents as discovered by the american psychological association and a survey of public school superintendents respectively:
“…homeschooled children may be unable to get along with others and may experience difficulty entering ‘mainstream life.’ home-schooled children, [the psychologists] said, ‘only hear their parents’ philosophies and have little chance to form their own views,’ whereas conventional schools teach ‘what society as a whole values.’ home schooling shelters children from society, they suggested, but traditional schools ensure that children will grow up to be ‘complete people’ by teaching key social skills such as cooperation, respect for others, and self-control’ (p. 108).
“…home schoolers ‘don’t want any influence other than parents’ in their children’s lives, believe ‘communities at large are evil,’ and ‘want to ensure their children’s ignorance’. The parents ‘have real emotional problems themselves, one superintendent asserted, and do not realize ‘the serious harm they are doing to their children in the long run, educationally and socially’” (p. 109).
Critics of homeschooling like those school psychologists and superintendents never explain how people have managed to become properly socialized for hundreds, if not thousands, of years when children didn’t go to school. Did all humans before mandatory public education never learn how to behave? Never learn how to interact with others? Never learn the beliefs and values of their society?
Leave that irrational idea aside. The negative views toward the issue of socialization and homeschooling are not supported by evidence. In his review of over a decade’s worth of studies, medlin found that homeschoolers have not only learned social skills, they also rated better in some areas than their peers who attended public school.
Homeschooling is far from an isolating experience. Medlin found that homeschoolers participate in a variety of social activities within their communities and those activities tend to involve a wider variety of people. The type of interaction homeschoolers engage in is much more like a real-world experience than is the experience of the public school child. Rather than being restricted to interactions with age mates and teachers, homeschoolers interact with people of all ages and from different walks of life.
In addition, medlin found that homeschooled children not only learn how to behave appropriately, they also develop a healthy self-esteem. In fact, the research suggests that they are far from worse off as a result of being homeschooled. They are most likely better off. They have fewer behavior problems than do public school children, are more socially mature, and have better leadership skills.
Segregating children by age creates socialization problems for gifted children
The socialization issue is compounded by the fact that school officials tend to see socialization in a more restrictive way than the definition used by sociologists. School officials tend to believe socialization is the process by which children learn to interact appropriately with other children of the same age. At no other time in our lives are our social skills defined by how we interact exclusively with our age mates. We tend to socialize with others like us, those who share our interests, who “get” our jokes, who can discuss issues on our intellectual level. Those are our true peers. We can certainly find true peers our age, but we aren’t restricted to finding them in a group of 25 people.
Gifted children have much more difficult time finding their true peers in a school setting than do non-gifted children. Think again about a world in which you are forced to interact exclusively with a small group of twelve-year-olds. That is the kind of world we force on our highly gifted children. We can better understand how difficult it is for highly gifted children to find their true peers in school by first looking at IQ scores. IQ stands for “intelligent quotient,” which is determined by this formula: IQ = mental age/chronological age X 100. The IQ of most people fall in the 85-115 range).
A seven-year-old with an IQ of 100 is both mentally and chronologically seven (100 = x/7 X 100). However, a seven-year-old with an IQ of 130 has a mental age of 9 years and 1 month (130 = x/7 X100), while a seven-year-old with an IQ of 145 has a mental age of 10 years and 1 ½ months. The higher the IQ, the higher the mental age.
Expecting a seven-year-old with an IQ of 145 to find true peers with whom to interact and form friendships in a room full of seven-year-olds with iqs of between 85-115 is like asking a 10-year-old to interact and form friendships in a room full of seven-year-olds. It is quite likely that you would find that the ten-year-old would appear to have problems socializing.
It’s not just advanced intellectual ability that affects the socialization process in school either. Gifted children tend to develop asynchronously. That means that their development in the intellectual, physical, emotional, and social areas is uneven, so while they may be intellectually advanced, they are not necessarily advanced in the other areas. Many gifted children are socially advanced, able to get along well with others – outside of the school environment. They are especially adept at interacting with adults, whom highly gifted children see as their intellectual peers. These children in the school setting, however, are seen as being “too dependent” on adults, which to most teachers signals a lack of “appropriate” social skills.
Gifted children may or may not be emotionally advanced, but this area has additional problems. First, many gifted children are emotionally sensitive. They have what polish psychologist kazimierz dabrowski called an “emotional “overexciteability.” (dabrowski lists four other overexciteabilities in these areas: physical, sensual, intellectual, and imaginational.) children with this emotional sensitivity are the ones who are often told they are “too sensitive for their own good.” slights that roll off the backs of other children are taken to heart by these children. This depth of feeling is not a sign of emotional immaturity. It is a sign of the depth of their feelings.
In addition, because gifted children can think like an older child, teachers expect them to also act like an older child. For example, that seven-year-old with an IQ of 145 can think and talk like a ten-year-old, but she’s still seven. That means that she is more than likely going to act like a seven-year-old emotionally. However, teachers, and even parents, will interpret that normal seven-year-old emotional behavior as a sign of immaturity because they are expecting ten-year-old emotional behavior. Instead of seeing this as a need to place this gifted child with intellectual peers where she can learn how to control emotional responses (appropriate social behavior), it is seen as a sign that the child must stay with the other seven-year-olds.
Public schooling can harm the socialization process of gifted children
Children don’t come to school as blank slates whose self-concept and self-esteem are developed in school. A study by dario cvencek, anthony G. Greenwald, and andrew N. Meltzoff (2016) found that children have already learned to feel good or bad about themselves by the time they start school. As meltzoff says, “it is a social mindset children bring to school with them, not something they develop in school” (as cited in mcelroy, 2015). That means that a child may have already developed a positive sense of self through the socialization process at home and in the community. The question, then, is whether the continuing socialization process at school will benefit or harm a child. In the case of the gifted child, it is more likely to hurt than help.
Through the socialization process, children learn not only how to behave as a member of society, but also who they are. They develop a sense of self, and that sense of self is determined by the opinions others have of them. This is the looking glass self, a concept first introduced by charles horton cooley. According to this concept,, children develop a sense of self as a result of interacting with others. The development occurs in three steps (isaksen, 2013):
- They imagine how they appear to another person.
- They imagine what judgments others make of them based on their appearance and their behavior.
- They imagine how the others feel about them, based on the judgments made of them.
It’s important to note that the steps are all based on what the children imagine to be true. But what they imagine might not in fact be true. For example, a five-year-old kindergartener takes his planetarium to school, where the teacher allows him to use it to project stars on the walls and ceilings of the darkened classroom. This five-year-old wanted to spend hours talking about the constellations and the universe. A self-taught reader, this five-year-old had been reading about the stars for nearly two years and was eager to share what he had learned. The other five-year-olds, however, had little interest in learning details about the universe. Once the novelty of the stars on the walls and ceiling had worn off, the children wanted to move on to something else. They made this clear to the teacher, who then asked the child to turn off the projector. What this child imagined was that the other children didn’t want him to talk. He took it personally and imagined that the other children simply didn’t like him. That was not true. The children simply weren’t as interested in the topic. But the child saw himself as he imagined the other children saw him – unlikeable.
Of course, what a child imagines might be true. For example, this same child in first grade struggled to do assigned work. He struggled, not because it was too difficult, but because it was too easy. He told the teacher that it was too hard, however, because he didn’t have the understanding to explain that the simplicity of the work led to feelings of anxiety. The teacher, though, interpreted the child’s statement to mean that the child didn’t understand the material and doubled down on her efforts to explain the concepts and get the child to do the work. She saw the child as one who was less capable than the other children, but the exact opposite was true. The fact that the child knew he understood the material was less influential than the teacher’s opinion of him as a child who needed extra help. He imagined that the teacher saw him as incapable of doing the work, and he was right. That is how she viewed him. The child saw himself as the teacher did – a child with problems.
That five-year-old child is not an imaginary child. He is a real child and those were real experiences. These experiences demonstrate the effect school experiences can have on a child. As leigh shaffer (2005) notes, “social interactions can proceed smoothly only when all participants share a common definition of the situation” (p. 58), but in both situations the participants did not share a common definition of the situation. In kindergarten, the child and his classmates saw the same situation quite differently. In first grade, the child and his teacher saw the same situation quite differently.
These school experiences, and others like them, can negatively affect a child’s self-concept and lead to low self-esteem. This negative effect is the result of the socialization process as children alter their perception of situations to be consistent with the views of others (sherif & sherif as cited in shaffer, 2005). This is precisely what happened to that five-year-old child. He had entered school as a happy, confident child, but those experiences, and many others throughout his time in school, began to negatively affect his self-concept and led to low self-esteem. His socialization, like all socialization, began at home and in the community. All children begin to develop a sense of self through interactions with family members and with members of the community. These interactions may help them develop a strong, positive self-esteem, but the school experience for many gifted children not only fails to reinforce that positive self-esteem – it can destroy it.
Other factors negatively impacting children in school
Another factor that negatively impacts the the socialization process of gifted children in school is their advanced verbal abilities. This is especially true of verbally gifted children, whose large vocabularies and advanced verbal reasoning can put them at odds with other children. As virginia burney and kristie neumeister noted, “because of advanced vocabulary, increased intensity, and/or different interests, high ability children may experience difficulty interacting socially with the same-age peers.” think about that five-year-old kindergartener who wanted to talk about the universe with his classmates. He had the vocabulary, knowledge, and interest to discuss the topic for hours. His classmates did not.
Verbally gifted children can get frustrated when the other children do not understand them or when the other children cannot express themselves well. For them, communicating with non-gifted age mates can be a frustrating experience. It is not unusual for these children to appear withdrawn and unable to interact with others. In other words, they appear to lack social skills.
Many of these children are also introverts, who enjoy spending time alone with their thoughts and can feel overwhelmed or drained after spending time interacting with classmates. That is especially true when that interaction is nothing but frustrating. These children are not shy and do not lack social skills. When given the opportunity to interact with their intellectual peers, they do so with ease, although they will still need some “down time.”
Attempting to turn verbally gifted introverts into social butterflies can also damage a child’s self-concept and self-esteem. Most classrooms and lessons are designed with extroverts in mind, which isn’t surprising since the majority of people are extroverts, but that design is not good – or even healthy – for the introverts. Introverts prefer working alone, but are usually required to engage in cooperative learning. Children who do not participate are seen as uncooperative and therefore lacking in social skills. The response is too often to try to get the child to participate in more group activities in order to improve those skills.
This is not to say that introverts should not engage in any group activities, just that an unwillingness to participate is not necessarily a sign of a problem. Regardless, these children need quiet time for reflection, but even that is difficult in the typical elementary classroom today. That classroom is more often than not a loud and active place that is not conducive to quiet reflection (burress & kaenzig, 1999).
Both the advanced verbal abilities and introverted personalities of some gifted children lead to problems in the classroom that are more often than not interpreted by the teacher – and classmates – as a sign of inappropriate social behavior. That interpretation is reflected back on the child, whose looking glass self becomes a negative one.
What is the best schooling option for gifted children?
No option is best for all gifted children. Homeschooling may not be right for every child – but neither is public schooling. Too many people mistakenly believe that children must attend school with age mates in order to learn appropriate social skills. The reality, however, is that attending school can create social and self-esteem problems that hadn’t existed before these children started school. What matters most is whether children are provided with opportunities to socialize with others, both at home and in the community. It is in the interaction with others that we develop social skills, not in the interaction with our age mates.

Casino games compared: which is most profitable?
If you ask a random person from the street “which casino game is most profitable?”, they’ll probably respond “casinos cant be beaten, otherwise they wouldn’t exist”. If you ask someone with a bit more knowledge, they’d probably say “blackjack card counters have been known to beat casinos, but you can’t beat other games”. If you ask someone with lots of experience and knowledge, they’ll tell you that roulette is by far the most profitable casino game for professional players. This issue will explain why.
My initial gambling systems (horse racing)
I developed horse racing systems before roulette systems. But I eventually switched to roulette once I saw greater potential in roulette. Don’t get me wrong, because horse racing can be very profitable although profiting today is a lot more work than it used to be, because you are basically competing with other punters. If horse racing interests you, my advice is focus on VALUE bets. This is what my systems did. Any bet you make must be based on risk vs reward. For example, generally you don’t back a horse with a payout like 2:1, because this particular horse may be “saturated” with bets, and the payout may not worthwhile for the risk. For example, perhaps a TV presenter said the horse is likely to win, and people watching all rushed to bet on the horse. The payout may have started at 10:1, but after all the bets, the payout became 2:1. But in reality, perhaps the horse was just as likely to win as 5 other horses in the race. And perhaps each of these other 5 horses have payouts of 10:1. So why would you risk betting on the horse with a 2:1 payout? Although I have done well with horse racing, it became more work than it was worth. As it is now, the horse racing industry is saturated with “value bettors” who apply the same principle. So now it’s at the point where you need a lot of extra information and research to determine which horse is the best value bet.

My casino systems
While still developing horse racing systems, I developed casino gambling systems. Although I was most interested in roulette, I was not limited to any particular game. After a lot of losses, I concluded the following:
Slot machines
No known way to beat them, except for cheating devices. One of which is called the “light wand”. It is basically a small torch you stick into the payout slot to blind the mechanism that counts coins. So when a machine is paying out, it literally doesn’t know when to stop. But this is highly illegal and now old technology anyway (no longer effective). There has been other technology that is supposed to blast slot machines with radiation, and somehow force a payout. My experience with these is they have no real foundation, and do not work at all.
Blackjack
Edge could be obtained from card counting. Almost everyone knows this. But shuffle machines and changed procedures made counting cards increasingly difficult. It was not until many years later that I developed anything specific to beat blackjack. The latest technology is explained at www.Blackjackcomputers.Com, which is the CCSA (card counting & shuffle analysis computer). It does as the name suggests – it detected patterns from poorly designed shuffle machines, and counted cards at the same time. Even more recently is technology I’ve developed to see through cards. There are actually a few ways of doing this, and the technology I have works quite well. But the problems at this stage are the equipment needs to be made smaller, and that it can take 30 seconds to get a clear enough image of a card. This is not quick enough. I haven’t yet developed this technology further because my private teams focus on the hybrid roulette computer (www.Hybridroulettecomputer.Com) which can already achieve an enormous edge. Besides the “x-ray” technology (no it doesn’t actually use x-rays, it uses ambient radiation), the CCSA computer can achieve an edge of up to 10% in rare conditions. But in most modern casinos, the edge is around 2%. This may not seem like much, but keep in mind the typical edge against roulette players is just -2.7%, and it earns casinos a fortune.
The big wheel
Almost every casino has these, but they are called different things in different casinos. It’s just a big wheel like the “wheel of fortune”. There are ways to beat it, but there are too FEW variables that actually CAUSE predictable patterns, but they are time consuming to determine. Still though, it is a fact that any player can spend a lot more time studying a game than casinos or gaming equipment developers, so they are likely to learn more about it, and discover ways that game outcomes can be predicted. In my case I’ve been developing ways to beat casinos for around 20 years.
Roulette
Roulette has countless variables, and more variables means there is greater potential to uncover patterns that casinos will not know about. But my first systems were the typical “double up” after losses, looking for streaks and the alike. Just when I thought I had discovered a working system, I’d learn a hard lesson with a big loss. It took me many years to stop looking at the table, and start focusing on what happens at the wheel. While I don’t know precisely, it took me roughly 8 to 10 years to develop anything that actually worked. So indeed I wasted a lot of time. This was mostly because I wanted something simple and “mechanical” with no guesswork. I wanted to place my bets after a few spins of preparation, and walk out with thousands.
Eventually I “got over” my stubbornness and focused more on what I knew worked, which was applying physics to predict where the ball will land. 10 years ago, I thought I knew it all. Now I know that back then, I knew relatively nothing. And today, I know better than to say I “know it all”. I am still learning new things about predicting spins. Perhaps the learning will never stop.
Although I’m always open to more learning, my conclusion, which has been the same for around a decade, is that:
A. An edge of 30% to 120% can be regularly achieved with roulette, with the use of roulette computers, where it measures ball and wheel speed, then you bet just after ball release. But the computer needs to work properly and account for important variables. Very basic computers only work on very easily beaten wheels. Almost every wheel can be beaten this way provided that “no more bets” is called at least a few seconds after ball release.
B. An edge of 5% to 15% is possible when predicting spins and betting BEFORE the ball is released. It involves accurately modelling the relationship between the physical variables, the spin outcomes, and other spin outcomes. So there are three main groups of variables, and they must be correlated to each other. There is nothing “voodoo” about it. One analogy is it’s like using a 3D chart to see how everything matches up, but no, we don’t actually use a 3d chart in this case. We use “permutations” which are basically testing countless combinations, with the variables and data we have, to determine a “best fit” model. Approximately 1/3rd of modern wheels can be beaten this way. These days I focus on roulette computer use instead of this system’s use, so I don’t need it anymore. This is one of the reasons I offer it to other players. But one of the main problems with other players using it is they would need to learn how to use it. So I created what I call the JAA software, which essentially makes a complicated system easy to use.
So it is not just “possible” to beat roulette. It is a fact that it can and is being beaten.
However, I have never achieved my goal of a magical system where you can walk straight up to a wheel and start winning, without the casino doing anything about it. The closest I’ve ever gotten to this is the hybrid roulette computer. It will usually start producing an edge after 1 spin (that gradually increases), with the maximum edge being achieved after around 60 spins on a “difficult” wheel. Although, you can resume play virtually instantly on following days. Realistically, there doesn’t appear to be anything close to the hybrid computer. Besides, most players aren’t comfortable using hidden electronics. This is the main reason why the most popular method used by my players is the JAA system, which uses the “permutations” and cross referencing explained above. Although these are legitimately effective methods to beat roulette, understand they are not magic and still have limitations. There are many variables that determine if you can win roulette. Winning is not just about predicting spins. It is easy to beat almost any wheel at home. But winning in a casino requires many other elements including patience, remaining undetected, and dealing with ever-changing casino procedures that are designed to make professional play more difficult. And while casinos are gradulally making it harder to win, there is likely still many years to come in which roulette will still be reasonably easy and practical to beat, with the right approaches.
Before you go gambling: the best and worst casino game odds
Many people will be visiting a casino this summer, whether on a trip to vegas, on a cruise ship, or just at a local casino during a "staycation."
But before you go, you may want to know which games give you the best chance of winning.
So we went behind the scene at two casinos, and spoke with the game managers, to find out which games give you an edge.
Table games your best bet
Jay bean, a caesar's floor manager, agreed to sit down with us and talk about the games with the best odds.
He said many people don't realize that table games have much better odds than slots. They are intimidated by thoughts of card sharks taking their money, with images of an intense texas hold 'em tournament in their minds, and so they stick with the safe games: the slots.
But they are doing themselves a disservice, he said.
Bean's advice? After you've spent some time on the slot machines, move on to the blackjack table, and start by just observing.
Blackjack has the best odds of winning, with a house edge of just 1 percent in most casinos, bean said.
Plus, you are playing against only the dealer, not hooded poker champions.
"blackjack is one of our easiest games to play," bean said. "you're just looking for a number that beats the dealer's number without going over 21."
If you're a novice, bean said to sit down during a less busy time, such as the afternoon, and the dealer will walk you through the game.
But the same is not true with poker: you should practice the game with your friends first, at home, bean said, until you are comfortable with it. Bean said novices are best off passing on the poker tables, where yes, the competition can be tough.

So from the blackjack table, he suggests moving on to the dice game craps, the game with the second best odds, also nearly 50-50.
The craps table can be a bit intimidating for the beginner with all the boxes on the table, bean admitted. But it's really not tough, and it has one of your best chances of winning. In the end, all you are really doing is betting on a dice roll.
Bean said your next stop should be the roulette wheel. It's simple, and pays fairly well.
"so you bet on your favorite numbers," bean said. "the dealer spins, and if your number comes in you win."
If you stick to betting on just reds or blacks, you have nearly a 50-50 chance of walking away a winner. If it lands on red when you choose red, you will double your bet, bean explained.
While it may seem you have an even chance of winning by simply choosing a color, there is one catch that gives the house its edge: the extra green 0 and 00 position on the wheel. It's on all american roulette wheels.
Or, if you feel lucky, play just one number. It's hard to win, but if you do it pays out 36 to 1.
Your worst odds? The casinos, understandably, did not want to talk about games with poor odds.
So we turned to forbes magazine, which in a report about best bets at the casino, said two popular games -- the wheel of fortune and the ever-popular slot machines -- have the lowest odds of winning, with a house edge of 10 percent or more.
Professor of analytics michael magazine has crunched the numbers, and agreed that blackjack is the best way to go home with money in your pockets. He said if you take a little time to learn the game, you have the best odds of winning.
"you are somewhere between 44 percent to 48 percent in every single hand of winning," he said, noting that no other casino game gives you odds that good.
But magazine cautioned that he's not promoting gambling, because he said even games with the best odds still favor the house.
"play it long enough and you will lose. In the long term the house doesn't lose," magazine said.
Finally, if you really enjoy playing the slots, here is some good information to know, from state casino reports we examined.
With slots, the more money you put in per bet, the higher your chance of winning. If you put the max in a penny machine, which is usually around 50 cents, you have much better odds than if you put in 2 cents.
In addition, penny slots have the lowest odds, with $1 and $5 slots paying much better.

How casinos make money: the handle, house edge & more

Casinos make a profit by offering games of chance where the average payouts are lower than the income produced by the overall wagers. Exactly how this is accomplished and the terms used in producing casino records and income are explained below.
The handle
Regardless of what type of casino gambling is offered, the most important term for any gaming operator is the handle. The handle is the total amount of money bet. At a game like craps, all of the bets made on a table contribute to the handle, whether the bets win or lose, are made with cash or chips and are paid even money for bets like the pass line or 30-1 for bets like two and 12.
Players often confuse the handle (total bets) with the drop. For a casino, the drop is the money (or credit) exchanged for chips. At a game like blackjack, the total drop is what is found in the metal drop box attached to the table that all bills and markers (credit slips) are dropped in to. On occasion, the term handle is used interchangeably with the term drop.
House edge
The statistical advantage that the casino has in each game, and each bet, is called the house edge. This theoretical advantage the casino holds over the player on any single bet is what makes the game gambling, for the outcome is unknown, and regardless of who holds the edge, either party may win at any one time.
For the bottom line, the casino win is the net dollars retained by the casino after all bets are paid. This can be a negative amount - any time the players win more than the casino holds. The hold percentage is the relationship of the casino win to the drop.
If a slot machine has $100 inserted into it during a day and pays out $80, the casino win is $20. However, the hold percentage is based on total bets. If it is a $1 per spin machine and the machine recorded 1000 spins, then $1000 was wagered. Winning a total of $20 means the hold percentage is just $20/$1000 or 2/100 which is 2-percent.
Explaining the hold percentage
The hold percentage is better explained on a roulette table with a zero and double zero - the typical american wheel. On this game, the casino has a house edge of 5.26 percent. However, at the end of a shift, the game is likely to win close to 20 percent of the drop. For every $100 in the drop box, the house will likely have a hold percentage of 20 percent. This is because a player is likely to make many bets, over and over, each time against a house edge of 5.26 percent. They win some, they lose some and eventually lose what they were willing to risk on this particular table.
Factors influencing casino handle
The most important influence on casino handle is what is referred to as "time on device." regardless of what is bet, if there are no players, there is no handle and no profit. Casinos maximize their income when they find ways to increase not just their house edge, but the average bet and the amount of time each gaming device (table spot or slot machine) is in action.
As a business model, the overall handle is a product of capacity of use, game speed, and average bet. This is why all players club comps are based on your average bet and the hours played, not on how much you win or lose!
A casino with 1000 slot machines is only successful if they are in constant use. However, the utilization of game space and betting minimums at table games can be deceiving. This is why it is rare to see a blackjack game with a low $2 or $5 minimum, even if players are wandering around wanting to play that amount while there are several $25 tables with no players.
This phenomenon is best explained by the math produced for expected win per hour at a blackjack table. With six players betting $2 per hand, a dealer can get out 375 hands to the players. The total wagers (excluding double downs and splits) will equal $750 and the house expects to win 2 percent, or $15. However, just a single player at a $25 table will produce $4125 in bets per hour where the house expects to win 2 percent and a total of $82.
Obviously, the $25 game will be dead at times, but that single player easily makes up the difference, and if all the tables have low limits and there are no seats available for the big better then the house is losing out.
So, some decisions at your local casino are made for player comfort to extend the amount of time played, and some decisions are made simply based on casino income, as with any business. The above example also probably illustrates pretty well why a $5 blackjack player can only expect to earn about 30-cents per hour in comp value from their play.
The casino expects the player to get 60 hands per hour, so their total bets per hour equal $120. Using the same 2 percent house edge, the casino will retain about $2.40 from their play. Giving back 30-cents equals a comp value of 12.5 percent, which is pretty good. Most casinos hold the line between 10 and 15 percent.
