A great thing about this game is the power ups. You have the mushroom that makes you bigger, and the fire flower that makes you able to shoot out fire balls. There are a lot of new power ups as well, and I stress A LOT. Here is a list of them. I never did finish the first super mario bros. (as of yet) and I've never even played super mario bros. 2 but now, after liking this so much, I will seriously have to consider it.

I grew up with nintendo so though it's no longer something I play I will always have a soft spot for it. Super mario bros (1985) was a classic platformer and very enjoyable, super mario bros 2 (1988) almost put me off the franchise altogether and I simply didn't enjoy it, super mario bros 3 was a masterpiece I'll never forget.

For a start the game is considerably larger than most that were around at this time, it's a title you need to put plenty of hours into and even then you'll likely not see everything.

With a lot of new mechanics not seen before in a mario game it added to the dynamic instead of overly convoluting a classic formula like its predecessor did. Mario has multiple suits that assist him in his adventure, the game adds a wealth of fantastic enemies and memorable boss encounters.

Arguably SMB3 is one of the greatest platform games ever made and is a near perfect title that was only followed successfully by them once in this guys opinion. Then it went 3D and it all went downhill from there.

Super mario bros.3 is one of those few games that lives with me and I'll never forget yet will happily pick it up any chance I get. Near flawless.

Huge advancements from the previous titles

Everything is so very likeable

Whistles are an unnecessary cheatmode

Super mario bros. 3 is certainly an impressive game for 1988 standards and holds up as an innovative platformer even today. The graphics, level design and gameplay make for a truly great playing experience.

I never did finish the first super mario bros. (as of yet) and I've never even played super mario bros. 2 but now, after liking this so much, I will seriously have to consider it.

In terms of originality you won't find anything particularly amazing about the jumping of one platform to the next and collecting power-ups but it's how it all comes together and works so well that makes SMB3 stand out from the rest of the competition.

Some levels are tough, but stick at them and you'll memorise and master the tricky bits pretty quickly. However, that didn't stop me from crying out loud in sheer, hopeless frustration every now and again.

The GBA version adds a save function (a godsend for those who hate having to spend 86 hours finishing a game in one go), slightly tweaked levels and compatibility with the nintendo E-reader that offers bonus levels.

Considering how good this game is it's no wonder sonic had such tough competition from a short, fat italian plumber. Definitely one to hunt down.

Graphics A sound B (only because the famous super mario music is not featured) gameplay A lasting appeal A

When I was a young teenager my best friend had an NES, and we used to play this game all the time. It's almost certainly the best mario game, if not of all platforms than definitely NES. It makes up for the US release of "mario 2" (which was a stinker) and the gameplay is fantastic -- one player is addictive, fun and well designed with worthy baddies. The two-player is just as enjoyable and chances are you'll lose yourself playing the game.

Nowadays it's kinda hard to find this game although it might be available on gameboy. If you do happen to come across it I definitely recommend it -- it's a very entertaining, involving game and one of the all-time best for the NES and has created a lasting legacy. When people think of the familiar traits of what mario is today -- the mushrooms, the caps, the levels, the enemies, bowser -- it all really started with this.

Super mario 3 is not only one of the greatest mario video games, it is one of the greatest video games ever.

The plot is pretty simple. Basically you are traveling through eight different worlds in an attempt to rescue princess toadstool, nothing new.

Each world is interesting in its own right. There is the desert world, ice world, sky world, and big world.(big world is cool in that all the enemies are much bigger than mario) the levels are colorful and exciting and there are plenty of times where you must try to solve puzzling situations. Great fun levels.

A great thing about this game is the power ups. You have the mushroom that makes you bigger, and the fire flower that makes you able to shoot out fire balls. There are a lot of new power ups as well, and I stress A LOT. Here is a list of them.

Leaf gives you a racoon tail and ears and allows you to hover and fly short distances. Frog suit allows you to swim great in the water. Tanoki suit it is an entire full body racoon suit that has the same abilities as the leaf plus you can turn into a statue. Hammer brother suit wearing a hammer brother suit you are able to throw hammers at enemies. P wing allows you to fly through an entire level.

Another great feature is that you are able to obtain a lot of different items and store them. You can then use them when you are on the menu of whatever world you are in prior to starting a level. Being able to store items and use them when you wish is a great feature.

There are lots of fun games in each world. You get to battle hammer brothers for items and also you get to play a matching N card game for items and another slot machine game for items.

Gameplay is pretty good but it takes practice. Once you get the hang though it is great fun.

A great CLASSIC video game that is a must play. AWESOME.

Out of the 3 "super mario bros." games made for the NES, this one is hands down the best one. What can I say? This game is AWESOME!! All new enemies, cool new power-ups (like the tanooki suit, hammer bros suit, raccoon, and frog power-ups), warp whistles, and 8 different worlds. What more could you want? Overall, a superb game.

The first super mario bros is a classic game that is still fun to play as of today.Super mario bros 2 was good but different from the first and not as good.Super mario bros 3 is in my opinion, the best NES mario game in the series. It is basically the same as the first one, only the graphics are better,I find it more fun to play,it is a bit harder and you can transform mario into different things such as a raccoon mario. In my opinion, this is the best super mario bros game and also the best NES game ever.Just like the first game, this one is still fun to play as of today.

This has to be the best game I have ever played. I started to watch my cousin play it and wondered how he was so good at it. It is really hard to go through the whole game without using any cheats, whatsoever.

Here are the world names in order: grass world, desert world, water world, giant world, cloud world, ice world, pipe world, and dark world. The hardest one is of course, dark world. This world tests all of your skills and has every style of levels you have played so far. If you use a whistle to get there from world 1, then believe me, you have nothing to work with. I would much rather use a whistle in world 5 to get to world 8. The enemies are the same in some cases, but are not limited to brick throwing buzzy beetles, anvil frogs, fireball pipe flowers, jumping fireballs, rotating cosmic balls, the many koopa kings (in each small castle, at the end of it), and reversed bullets. This game is very challenging if you are a beginner and you will probably finish it in about 3 to 4 hours. If you are fairly good at it, it won't take you but 1 and a half to 2 hours.

Playing this game will give you an experience you will never regret. Enjoy it today!

Every nintendo console ever produced has had its own iconic mario game. While many would argue that "super mario world" was that title for the super nintendo, I would say that the distinction belongs to "SMB 3" (as packaged with super mario all-stars). With the possible exception of "mario '64", "SMB3" may just be the most well-rounded mario game ever produced.

I could go into a detailed explanation of why this game is so well-renowned, but I think I'll stick to something a bit more esoteric here: basically, it is just a ton of fun to play! What the original mario bros. Did for gaming was to show the gamer what true fun playing a TV-based video game looked/felt like. "SMB3" expands on that with even brighter colors, more visually interesting locals, and a good difficultly scale (easy to pick up. Really tough to beat!). When I tried playing "SMB 2" or "lost levels", I always got the sense that the experience was "work". With this game, though, it was always fun (even on the tough levels!).

I realized this game was originally created for the NES, but I spent 98% of my hours playing on it using "super mario all stars" for the SNES. While I can't say this for many other games, I always felt like this "port" played/looked better on the SNES than it did on the NES.

A perfect game for beginners and hard-core mario gamers alike!

When I was a kid, super mario bros. 3 was the only video game that mattered. I still remember going to the video store almost every day after school to rent it and always leaving empty-handed. On the day that my mother countered my suggestion that we try one more time by surprising me with my very own copy, I felt like ralphie when he unwrapped the BB gun in A christmas story. Tips and tricks regarding warp whistles and the locations of power-ups dominated my lunchroom conversations. At first, I thought the game was a secret amongst my geeky friends, but eventually, nearly everyone in my class ended up contributing to our discussion.

Why is super mario bros. 3 such a universally loved video game? The simplicity and elegance of its graphics and gameplay is certainly a main reason. Even someone who is new to video games would have little trouble getting past world 1-1 and possibly further. The graphics are simple, colorful and make each item's purpose and each enemy's attack pattern quickly apparent. They also add distinction and atmosphere to each level and world in a way that maximizes the NES' 8-bit potential. As for the controls, they are tight and turn-on-a-dime responsive, not to mention easy to master. It takes no time at all to learn fundamentals such as when to let go of the B button to stop running at just the right moment or how hard to press the A button to execute the right jump. While the first game in the series shares many of these merits, super mario bros. 3 surpasses its predecessor not only by exceeding them, but by allowing players to better customize the gaming experience. The first game has warp zones, but super mario bros. 3's warp whistles take the concept even further, and the game even lets players skip entire levels within worlds. The third game is also even richer when it comes to rewarding players for being ingenious and going off the beaten path. In addition to the secret locations of the warp whistles and prime power-ups like the tanooki and hammer suits, it is possible to gain dozens of extra lives and warp to the final world in less than an hour's time. All of these qualities add up to make a video game that is endlessly replayable as well as challenging enough for the gaming amateur to finish and for the gaming expert to unravel every secret. The 2D platformer is one of the most beloved video game genres, and thanks to the recent explosion of indie gaming, it is still going strong. Regardless, despite many worthy challengers, super mario bros. 3 is still at top of this genre's heap.

Super mario bros. 3 – review

Review by retro

Reviewed: 06/30/01 | updated: 02/23/03

THIS is a 10/10 game if I've ever played one!

After a wildly successful second installment in a now famous series of video games, everybody and their mama knew that there was no way that a third game was not going to be made. The makers had a choice to make, though. Would the future third title be another strange, yet engaging platformer, or would they decide to take a trip back to the roots and make this sequel a bowser-infested, enemy-stomping, princess-saving adventure? Well, they decided to do the latter and go back to the ways of the blockbuster original, only this third outing would prove to be vastly improved in almost every way.

As in the original, the only playable heroes in super mario bros. 3 are the mustachioed plumbers, mario and luigi. The princess has once again been kidnapped by the evil, flame-spitting dragon named bowser. She doesn't care whether it's mario or luigi that rescues her; the princess is just tired of smelling bowser's fiery 5000º breath, and she really misses seeing fellow individuals of her own species. Being single, unemployed plumbers, the two brothers jump at the chance to be heroes once again. But the road to the forbidden castle in which the monstrous green, spiky creature resides won't be an easy one.

Since old, blocky terrains along with a bout against a leaping bowser at the end of each world didn't prove challenging enough, bowser found a mate during his five-year vacation (though no one has ever seen her or knows who she is). From that mysterious relationship came seven mischievous kids that bowser would decide to bring along with him. At the end of the first seven worlds awaits one of the little rascals who enjoy trying to fry some human butt with various magic wand powers or by simply touching a victim with their overly contaminated selves. If mario or luigi is skillful enough to defeat a koopa kid, he will be a proven idol for that world's king, and best of all, he'll receive a letter from the treasured princess.

The infamous family of dragons isn't just lined up in a neat single file line waiting for a plumber to take on. No, you must first guide mario or luigi through several different lands in order to locate the airborne airship that houses the main boss. There are a total of eight mind-boggling worlds in all. You will venture through deserts filled with dancing palms; attempt to stay afloat in lands literally overflowing with water; try to squeeze through terrains where everything is ten times larger than normal; take your journey miles above sea level in cloud-filled surroundings; freeze your ass off in a world that looks like it comes from the ice age, and so much more!

Upon beginning your fun filled, yet dangerous quest, you'll see (by aid of an overhead map of the world) that each and every world is composed of several levels, and even a few never before seen buildings (at the time of course :-þ), such as impressive looking castles that have the word 'HELP' shooting out the top of them. Sand-colored fortresses, toad-infested mushroom houses, and even a caveman-looking hammer brother also invade most maps.

As you progress through the levels in each captivating world, you will have to force your brain to make its decision as to how to get past the legions of enemies and situations that await your presence. Use gliding beetles as stepping stones high up in the skies above you; avoid a hotheaded sun as it circles down trying to heat you up; fight to make your way higher up on a sinking water-infested land to avoid the frightening jaws of a hungry fish; climb aboard long tanks and battleships that are packed with cannons that never run out of ammo; have fun getting lost inside fortresses that contain hundreds of rooms but only one exit, and throw fireballs at blocks of ice that enclose great numbers of coins so you can collect the riches!

It would be a very difficult quest indeed if it wasn't for the mario brothers being so popular with certain citizens, namely toad. Scattered around like four leaf clovers in a grass field is a living mushroom named toad (and I thought toads were a species of frog. ) that makes his residence in a spotted mushroom house. Go inside these buildings and you'll be able to select from three treasure boxes that each contain a valuable item.

Also lying around lazily on each world's map is a card that has a black spade on it. Instead of a slow-going time passer like solitaire or rummy, these spade rooms contain a fast-moving slot machine for a chance at some extra lives. The third most common chance at the gaining of a usable item comes by way of the hammer bros. That run around on the face of each map. Defeat these threatening foes and you'll be given either a worthy item or one that you want to drop like a bad habit. These aren't all the places on the map that are there just to supply you with useful items or coins, but they are the only ones that you will see more than once in a blue moon. Others, such as a treasure ship that carries most of its weight in coins, only appear when you, the player, unknowingly or cheatingly performs a certain function.

These 'items' are one thing that makes super mario bros. 3 better than its previous two installments, and better than 99.9999999% of the other platformers in the world. Yes, the mushrooms are still here for growing 15 years older in a matter of split seconds; there are still cleverly hidden extra lives; thousands of coins are either hidden inside rotating question mark blocks or waiting out in the great wide open. Not to mention the pleasant inclusions of invincibility stars and flowers for infinite fireballs.

As welcome a sight as these old familiar faces are, the new items are what really makes the game even more playable and enjoyable. Mario and luigi can now collect leaves that enable them to literally take off and fly, music boxes for putting certain map-invading foes to sleep by singing them a soothing lullaby, power wings for flying out of the screen and into eternity, and even whistles for skipping entire worlds like a time traveler would!

Even better are the suits that the happy go lucky plumbers can strap on for unique and unforgettable powers. Mario and luigi may be seeking the hand of the beautiful princess, but they're not putting on their tuxedos. No, 'suit' super mario bros. 3 style includes innovative coverings for extra special abilities.

Putting on a frog suit will permit you to humorously hop around and to jump much higher on land, but even better, you'll be able to swim like a frog (fast!) underwater. Raccoon suits give you a tail to spin, the ability to fly, and best of all, the capability to turn you into a stone statue! While transformed into this statue that looks like a bald mario holding up a sort of shield, enemies move right through you without causing any harm (totally amazing)! Finally, the hard to find hammer bros. Suit is quite possibly the best. Find one of these and you'll be mutated into a hammer brother! This is really a treat because it allows you to run and jump about everywhere while throwing hammers at anything you please, just like those annoying creatures in super mario bros. Did. Mario and luigi may always have a joyful look on their faces, but trust me, they have revenge gleaming in their eyes!

Where the hell are the enemies.

Oh yeah! Just like the items, many of your recognizable favorites are here to roam about in this more than glorious sequel. For instance, ground dwelling goombas are still walking strong after all these years, and those hard-shelled beetles continue to show their gloomy faces on occasion. But they're nothing compared to the inventive new enemies. Chain linked balls and chains rear their ugly, doglike faces at anyone who gets within a few feet of their personal space; small green creatures regurgitate deadly spiked balls and then throw them your way (heads up!); subaquatic adult squids with several offspring chase you as if you're playing hide & go seek; terrifying mini bosses jump around trying to stomp on you as if you were a dying fire, and the list could go on for at least 50 more KB.

A one-player platformer couldn't be much better!

If I've learned one thing from playing super mario bros. 3 after all these years, it's that it is a prime example of the word overachiever. It just wasn't enough to include swarms of new, never before seen enemies, to add in separate worlds that each have their own personality, and to throw in several different bonus games for a chance at extra lives or other much needed articles.

No! The makers of super mario bros. 3 couldn't settle with just making one of the absolute best one-player games that the universe would ever see. They went on and put in two-player capability while they were at it! You and a friend, enemy, or acquaintance can play a two-player turn-taking game at any time. If you get tired of conquering or dying in the levels of the main game itself (not likely!), both of you can always force mario and luigi to go back to their old jobs by transporting them to a subterranean sewer and then playing the original mario bros. It was the first game that the siblings first appeared in together. Ridding the screen of scurrying crabs, slow turtles, and hopping flies never ceases to be fun.

For the time, and for all times, super mario bros. 3 has impressive graphics. The levels and maps are drawn out in nice cartoonish detail, the characters move around fluidly, and the landscapes are relatively colorful. It's nice to just sit back and watch the waves move back and forth on world 4's map, to witness the glorious effects of getting three cards of a kind at the end of a level, and so on.

The sounds in super mario bros. 3 have always been easy on the ears. From the 'boing' sound of jumping to the pounding sound of a turtle bouncing back and forth off of rock hard blocks, none of the sounds should make you want to mute your television or make yourself deaf. However, what I'm most impressed by is the variety of catchy tracks that come from your television set throughout most of the game. Most of the music successfully sets the mood with the environment that currently surrounds you. Wait until you hear the evil, haunting sound of world 8's map, and the track that plays while on a moving ammo-filled tank that just makes you want to yell ''CHARGE!!'' and get on with the action as fast as possible. Whether you're flying with precision, aiming fireballs in a direct spot, or jumping from platform to platform, the game's controls are right on. I just played through the game today, from start to finish, and I don't remember any problems with the controls at all.

Simply put, super mario bros. 3 is one of the very best video games of all time, to say the least! Along with all of its other great assets, it has replay value that doesn't know how to run out, and it will never learn how to. If you're a platformer fan and even if you're not, just get the thing. If you don't, you will be the one missing out on a classic!

In super mario bros. 3, bowser has become a father. His seven children, the koopa kids, have invaded the lands neighboring the mushroom kingdom – attacking their castles and casting spells on their kings (who have been transformed into animals). It's up to mario and luigi to travel through these worlds, teach the koopas a lesson, and reclaim the magic wands that have the power to reverse the transformation curse.

It's an epic undertaking, especially from the NES era – and it's a blast to play every step of the way. The gameplay of super mario bros. 3

Is built on the foundation of shigeru miyamoto's original side-scrolling, platforming design, but it's expanded in every aspect. Venturing through levels is more open than ever, with no restriction put on exploration. Map screens are introduced to give players a choice of where to go next, including non-action locations like toad's item house and card-matching mini-games. A reserved item menu is even available, letting gamers save key power-ups to use later on.

User Reviews (21), super mario bros 3 slot game review.

And there are plenty to choose from. Though the newly-released super mario galaxy is once again replete with fresh new upgrades and suits for our hero, it still doesn't match the sheer amount of items included here. Super mario bros. 3 more than quadrupled the number of obtainables from the first game's simple trio of mushroom, flower and star – there's a freshly-added leaf that transforms the plumber into raccoon mario, giving him a whip-around frontal enemy attack and the power to fly; a frog suit that makes land travel cumbersome but swimming a cinch; and a hammer bros. Suit that lets mario play the villain, throwing arcing hammer projectiles and crouching to gain resistance to fire.

Further, there are several items that can be activated only on the game's maps, and trigger interactions with the environment there – a hammer that clears away rocks and reveals new paths to travel, a music box that lulls wandering enemies into blissful sleep, and the famous warp whistles that summon up a whirlwind to carry you away to the secret "world 9," home of warp pipes that can send you to any of the game's other worlds.

It's an expansive adventure, full of action and tons of secrets. And now, over 17 years after its original release and standing alongside more modern contemporaries like galaxy, sunshine and super mario 64, super mario bros. 3 still holds up perfectly. It's just as accessible as it's always been, and continues to be one of the best 2D platformers ever made.

Playing super mario bros. 3 emulated through the virtual console reveals, of course, some subtle imperfections that you might not have noticed in the early '90s – specifically, its graphics engine. A thin vertical strip of screen real estate remains blank on the left side of the viewable area in SMB3, an artifact of its original 8-bit programming that wasn't as noticeable when it ran off of a cartridge and NES hardware. You might notice flicker in the graphics from time to time, especially in levels with forced environment scrolling like the world-ending airship stages.

Also, gamers used to the SNES era control scheme of Y button running and B button jumping will be disappointed to hear that the SNES-styled classic controller doesn't work that way for this VC edition of mario 3 – which is completely normal for NES titles on the VC and nothing new at all, but feels like a fresh issue because super mario world is, by contrast, perfect on the CC. You'll likely just want to use a sideways-held wiimote for this game.

But it's really a stretch to call either of those issues issues at all. You'll be mildly distracted at worst, but quickly recaptured by the magic of stomping foes with kuribo's shoe, leaping over the quicksand of the koopahari desert and taking out the enormously oversized enemies of giant land. You know you're going to warp straight there and check out those gigantic goombas on your new big screen HDTV, aren't you?

Verdict

Super mario bros. 3 is still a spectacular adventure today, and the best representation of the mario universe to come from the NES. Though we would have loved to see a little something extra thrown in for this release, it's difficult to argue against nintendo's standing policy of just releasing games just as they were when they first arrived – and mario's third adventure still stands well enough on its own to firmly recommend it for download even with its old graphical quirks still in place. The only reasons you shouldn't already be walking to your wii to launch the shop and put down your 500 points would be if you're happy with a version of the game you already own, like the 2003 game boy advance re-release, or if you're holding out hope that the visually enhanced super mario all-stars edition will someday arrive as a downloadable option as well. But really, even then, it's five bucks. For one of the greatest video games of all time, and absolutely one of mario's best ever adventures. So how can you resist adding to that already-enormous lifetime sales total?

Time has done nothing to dampen the funky and fresh platforming served up by super mario bros. 3

By frank provo on december 19, 2007 at 4:53PM PST

"mario! Mario! Mario!" was the chant echoed by a legion of people in the TV advertisements for super mario bros. 3 that aired leading up to its original release in 1990. At the end of that famous commercial, the camera flies skyward to reveal the population of north america grouped together in color-coordinated outfits to create a visage of mario spanning the entire continent. Looking back, that ad was a deft summary of the anticipation that had built up prior to the game's release, as well as an accurate predictor of the praise it would receive once people got their hot little handss on that grey NES cartridge. In super mario bros. 3, nintendo promised and delivered one of the best 2D platformers of all time. Now, this genuine milestone in the history of video games is available once again; this time as a download for the wii's virtual console service.

Mario's reign of terror against turtles, mushrooms, and carnivorous plants continues unabated.

If you're already intimately familiar with super mario bros. 3, feel free to skip ahead a couple of paragraphs. If, somehow, you haven't played the game before, or you've been boycotting everything associated with the movie the wizard starring fred savage, you need to get with the program, fast. Super mario bros. 3 is eight worlds and 70-plus levels of side-scrolling goodness. You run fast, you leap across pits, you pounce on goombas, and you pick up turtle shells then throw them. You'll also want to head-bash all of the "?" blocks you see because they release power-ups that make mario bigger and give him useful abilities. Fire flowers let you throw fireballs, stars make you invincible for a brief period, and leaves turn you into a flying raccoon with a killer tail. On the map screen, you'll visit bonus games that reward you with extra lives, warp whistles, and power-ups that you can bring into the levels. These include the normal power-ups, as well as some unique costumes that can transform mario into a swimming frogman or a hammer-tossing turtle.

Variety set super mario bros. 3 apart from the other cookie-cutter platformers of the era, and it's the main reason why the game still feels fresh today. You'll encounter mushroomlike goombas, snapping turtles, bulky dudes in football gear, and skeletons that fall apart when you pounce on them. In the castles and airships within each world, you'll come across different koopaling bosses that will have you ducking from then jumping over their attacks as you dish out the necessary licks to send them packing. The level designs don't adhere to one particular style. Instead, they involve a healthy rotation of platform-jumping, forced scrolling, swimming, and switch-based puzzles. One world is packed with giant renditions of normal enemies. Best of all, as you forge ahead, you'll discover that every level holds optional paths or pipes that lead to shortcuts and caches of extra lives; not to mention the goofy secrets that exist only because mr. Miyamoto thought they'd be interesting. If you duck down on a white slab, you'll blend in with the background. If you do it from stages one through three, you might find a warp whistle.

This virtual console download is an exact emulation of the original NES version, which means it doesn't contain the additional levels, the richer 16-bit graphics, or the revamped music that was included with the later super NES and game boy advance remakes. That's not a big deal, really, considering the NES game already had plenty of levels and top-notch 8-bit frills. Mario and his enemies are whimsically animated, as well as cute in that cartoonish sort of way. As for the backgrounds, the pastel colors, puffy clouds, and large environmental structures do a good job of rescuing the game from the recycled tile patterns normally found in 8-bit side-scrollers. A large grassy hill here, some smiling clouds there, and a few pyramids or castles go a long way toward making you feel like you're actually running around in mario's world. Of course, the familiar mario sound effects are present, along with a batch of insidiously memorable musical compositions concocted by koji kondo, one of the few people who really knew how to make the NES sing.

Kuribo's shoe is a perfect example of how crazy super mario bros. 3 can get.

For the most part, the graphics and audio match what you'd see if you hooked an old NES up to another TV then compared the two versions side-by-side. If you have a HD set, you may have to boost the color saturation to make the graphics pop like they did back in the day. Unfortunately, the default button layout of the classic controller forces you to bend your wrist at an uncomfortable angle when you try to press the jump and attack buttons simultaneously. Because of that, the basic wii remote is your best option for long play sessions. Because the virtual console is basically emulating the original NES code, the game doesn't provide its own save mechanism. However, thanks to the automatic suspend and restore feature built into the virtual console service, you can exit back to the channel menu then pick up right where you left off the next time you start the game.

The only blemish in the emulation is the thin blue or black border that's always visible on the far left side of the screen. This so-called overscan area wasn't visible when people played the NES cartridge on old televisions, but now that modern tvs don't automatically trim away the edges, this tiny strip is there to (potentially) distract you. Realistically, you'll rarely notice it when you're playing because you'll be too busy with the platforms and enemies occupying the main screen area.

Those who already love super mario bros. 3 and have the desire to play the original NES version again will be pleased with this virtual console release. It's like reconnecting with a best friend that you haven't seen since you were little. Meanwhile, those who haven't yet immersed themselves in its jump-heavy sweetness have been given a golden opportunity to do so. This is 500 wii points ($5) well spent.

So here we have a game that the guinness book of world records proudly proclaims to be the best selling game of all time. When I went to the guinness museum in , they had a nice little display with a game boy advance set up for anyone that wanted to play mario 3 for themselves. And while I was eager to sit down and play through the entire game in that one sitting like the platforming geek that I am, this was new year’s eve and we were quickly running out of year. So I had to be on my merry way a.

The example of expanding on a already successful formula

Super mario bros. 3(nintendo entertainment system) by guip1408 on june 14, 2018

The third game on the super mario series is one of the best examples in gaming history of how to take a game that is already great and make some upgrades to it's sequel, making it still fresh, challenging and fun. The large number of outfits, giving it a very unique change of pace to the game, with so many variables on the gameplay was stunning when it first came out.The game also expanded on the number of secrets you could find throughout the levels, being warps or bonus-zones, giving you some.

I still remember the hype surrounding super mario bros. 3, with this game being the talk in those junior high school walls. Whenever anyone talks about mario their memory isn't of 1 or 2; its not thinking about 64 or sunshine; not his parties or his go-karts; not of his amazing (and surprising) athletic prowess and finesse. No, not at all. These people are thinking about mario 3.Mario 3 is mario's magnum opus. It is the cream of the cream. Super mario bros. 3(nintendo entertainment system) by bshirk on july 15, 2009

Mario 3 holds a special place in my heart, as it's my favorite 2D mario game. I loved super mario world, but after replaying both games recently, I felt that super mario bros. 3 had the best level design in the series. First of all, the graphics are a significant improvement over its predecessors. Mario looked like a collection of pixels in the original NES super mario bros., but in mario 3, he began to take on the appearance that we're all familiar with now. Besides featuring better charact.

Super mario bros 3 is actually considered by many not just to be the best mario game around but the best platformer ever. The story is the kings of the seven worlds have had the wands taken from them by bowsers koopalings and transformed them into animals. Mario and luigi have to retreive them but while they are doing that bowser kidnaps princess peach or toadstool whatever you want to call here. The controls play just like super mario bros but you get new power ups to go alongside the fireflower.

This is the #1 mario game for the NES! This really helped us get an awesome way to play super mario games! This was the first mario game to have maps! You got to choose where to go some times. You also had to do some thing to get some things in the game. Also, this was the first mario game to have two mario games in it! You could play “mario bros.” to see who would go next if you wanted! There were also 4 new power ups in the game! 5 if you include the P-wing. You had frog, raccoon, hammer, an.

Even after 19 years this is still an excellent game

Super mario bros. 3(wii shop) by ehsan on april 04, 2009

Good: one of the greatest games…. Ever; 70+ levels of pure fun; new suits are awesome to play with; excellent music; some of the best level designs in an NES game; costing 5 dollars is just a total steal. Bad: the game could have used more levels that include kuribo's shoe; A save file system would have been nice; some levels in the game can be marked as cheap and unfair. Super mario bros. 3 was released in 1990, and it proved to be a phenomenal game, sometimes even considered one of the great.

Super mario bros. 3 is quite possibly the greatest game ever made, and I do not say that lightly. Of all the things I could say about super mario bros 3, none of them are negative-- the game's controls are near perfectly tuned, the powerups are all unique and useful, the worlds each have a distinct look and feel which keeps the game fresh, the levels are all unique and memorable, and finally, the game's difficulty is tuned perfectly to not be too easy or hard, and certainly beatable. All of these.

Super mario bros. 3(wii shop) by grahfzilla on march 13, 2010

Super mario bros 3 is a true classic. I honestly that there's nothing wrong with this game, it was absolutely perfect when it was first released in 1990, and it is still awesome to play today. The music, the costumes, the gameplay, even the graphics hold up really well today. So why did I give it 4.5 stars instead of 5? Simply because the version included in super mario all-stars for the SNES is better. That's it. A timeless classic.

Cursed forever with greatness!

Super mario bros. 3(nintendo entertainment system) by the_lord_fagan on july 21, 2008

Aside from being, hands down, the greatest game on the original nintendo entertainment system, mario 3 has stood the test of time and has become burned indelibly into the memory of a generation of players. With the largest and most diverse collection of power ups and eight worlds of ever more challenging levels, this game is so perfectly awesome that enjoying it has become something of liability as a fan gets older. I've had dreams about being trapped in this game. I've got two super stars tatto.

The best NES game ever made

Super mario bros. 3(nintendo entertainment system) by mrjonathanamoore on october 14, 2015

Super mario bros 3, for the time it came out, was unlike anything ever seen on the original nintendo. Sure you had some pretty graphically great games, but nothing quite looked as clear, as colorful and as artistic as super mario bros 3. It really is a sight to behold. It really is a incredibly fleshed out version of the original, we have the mushroom kingdom but in a way far unlike what we've seen before. I would say of any game in the series, mario 3 is probably the biggest step up from the it.

I ❤ old games!

REVIEW # 00000000 00011000

Oh, it’s terrible! The king has been transformed! Please find the magic wand so we can change him back.

No game has ever been so clese to the perfection as super mario bros. 3.

Or better, maybe super mario bros. 3 IS the perfection, at least for me. This is definetely the best NES game I ever had and the one that nowadays is still the most difficult to beat. I remember that after a few months spent playing it in 1992, one day I cried because I read on the handbook that was the last super mario game: obviously I didn’t think that mario’s legacy woudl have been so long and knowing that such a perfect game was the last of its saga for me was depressing. I still keep (not only in my heart) the original SMB3 cartridge as a relic, as it was the greates gift of all my life: in a certain way, considering my relatioship with the video games, is really the greatest gift of all my life.

User Reviews (21), super mario bros 3 slot game review.

I completed this game 5 years ago on yhe NES I still have, perfectly working after almost 25 years and I almosta cried again when I finally defeated the very last boss. It was the end of an era started 19 years before.

SMB3 is perfect for a lot of reasons: it’ simple to handle but it’s very long, though it gives you the possibility to keep playing for a long time since it’s quite easy to collect ups, every world is never too short or too long, you have a lot of new power-ups, you can collect them and use them when you are in need, you have a bunch of sub-mini-games you can play to collect coins, points or lives, you have a lot on brand new enemies, an amazing graphics, a beautiful plot, great longevity, musics and sounds to lose your mind onto.

Super mario bros. 3 is THE game. No more words can describe it in a better way.

My heart says…

This was one of the NES game I owned during the early 90’s and the same day I got it I started to play only with it (or at least 99% of the time spent on NES). It’s by far not only one of the best games ever conceived, but also one of the games I cried when I completed it.

I don’t know what to say, really, it’s a PERFECT game…

Oh boy, seeing mario coming to the screen along with his old enemies with that chessboard floor and starting to discover the new SMB3 features such as the leaf it’s definitely an orgasm for the sight. Nothing can beat it.

8-bit graphics at its best: we already know that nintendo was a northern star for the graphic accuracy and for the magnificent use of the colors and in SMB3 I thiks the couple NES-nintendo reached the highest point of its history. No other console could have beaten them and as far as I know, no console or computer have ever beaten this immense perfection, obviously in relation on the “limit” of an 8-bit one. Perfect.

Following the plot already sketched out on the first episode, we have mario busy trying to rescue princess toadstool. But this time he has to wander around 8 different worlds each one with at least 5-6 levels, each one with its particular environment, enemies, locations and power-ups. Mario have to defeat the 8 sons of bowser with each one ruling on a different kingdom, in order to face the koopa king and finally rescue peach. I mean, the subject is more or less always the same but the screenplay is awesome!

User Reviews (21), super mario bros 3 slot game review.

User Reviews (21), super mario bros 3 slot game review.

Here’s the perfection, again. The gameplay follows thefootsteps of the first episode, but while in super mario bros. We had only three power-ups (magic mushroom, fire flower and starman), the possibility to find the 1-up mushroom and several enemies (goombas, two king of koopa troopa, hammer bros, all the enemies from the sea world and so on) here we have way more power ups and more than double enemies.

Since this section could grow too loong and I don’t want to you to fall asleep, I think I will dedicate a specific post to it. Mario deserves it.

In SMB3 is quite easy to collect extra lives, but even if at some point you’ll reach like 40-50 lives don’t count your checkens before they’ve hatched: in the last two world, especially in the very last one you will lose almost all of them.

Nintendo developers probably foresaw they made a game it was a bit long and difficult so they counterbalance the lenght with the possibility not to save but at least to restart from the beginning of the world mario is in when he loses his last life. This avoid the players to die thinking to restart all over again since, trust me, it’s not too easy to reach level 8. Or even level 7 if you don’t use some tricks (only when I was adult I knew the location of the whistles)…

User Reviews (21), super mario bros 3 slot game review.

SMB3 introduces a lot of features such as the possibility to gain extra life during the level, when he hits the box in the end to collect mushroom, flower or star; if he collects three of a kind he receives respectively 2, 3 or 5 extra lives, otherwise only one. In the overworld map mario can also play against toad in a slot machine-like game or in card game where he has to match two cards to earn lives, money or power-ups. Nevertheless mario can enter in toad’s hut and open one of the three boxes he finds where is hidden a power-up.

User Reviews (21), super mario bros 3 slot game review.

The 8-bit era was notable also for the wonderful sounds and musics of the games. The first chapter of the saga had the full potential to become a a masterpiese here is only a small sample of what your ears can be delighted of

User Reviews (21), super mario bros 3 slot game review.

Despite of the nintendo developers idea to give the player the possibility to restart from the beginning of the world you lose your last life into, SMB3 is not an easy game. Or better, it’s easy managing the control, as in other titles, but it’s hard to complete the game in a reasonable time, unless you don’t keep on your NES for days (a thing I couldn’t do in the past). For these reasons the game has a great longevity and is always wonderful to play it again, even if you know all the enemies and all the tricke. This is the most important thing for the everlasting success of a game.

Final score 100/100 cum laude

During the days of the NES and SNES there was a reason to wait salivating for the next nintendo first party titles, especially super mario games. The reason was because you knew that a very solid and memorable gaming experience was coming your way and it was only a matter of time. I still remember the hype surrounding super mario bros. 3, with this game being the talk in those junior high school walls. I mean literally everyone was waiting for this game, and it sure as hell did not disappoint. S.

When people talk mario, they mean mario 3

Super mario bros. 3(nintendo entertainment system) by crono on september 13, 2008

The game defies any real description as mere mortal words cannot adequately describe the pristine perfect playability that is super mario bros. 3. While today a game with a c.

A legendary 2D mario experience

Super mario bros. 3(nintendo entertainment system) by bshirk on july 15, 2009

Mario 3 holds a special place in my heart, as it's my favorite 2D mario game. I loved super mario world, but after replaying both games recently, I felt that super mario bros. 3 had the best level design in the series. First of all, the graphics are a significant improvement over its predecessors. Mario looked like a collection of pixels in the original NES super mario bros., but in mario 3, he began to take on the appearance that we're all familiar with now. Besides featuring better charact.

Super mario bros. 3 is the third installment in the mario series, and one of his best. You take control of mario in this platformer and are set out to save a princess from the koopa kids. You travel and explore eight diverse and unique worlds, with tons of new features. This is also one of marios best adventures hes has ever been on, and a very fun one to last. Super mario bros. 3 is like your average platformer with familiar gameplay to that of the previous installments in the franchise. You w.

Super mario bros. 3(wii shop) by tireyo on february 03, 2009

The commonly known game known as super mario bros. 3 is simply one of mario's greatest adventures yet on the NES and now for the virtual console. Everything in this game is expertly designed, imaginative, and enduring. This game is sure to please any mario fan, and any gamer who picks this up will enjoy this. Super mario bros. 3 even inspired a cartoon show! I also watched the cartoons when it came on. When I picked this up back in the day, I knew that I was playing a masterpiece! It is no wonde.

The best mario game ever.

Super mario bros. 3(nintendo entertainment system) by mario_galaxy_fan on july 26, 2008

INTRODUCTION when I got my first game console, the NES, for christmas from one of my uncle’s back then, the game that came bundled with the 8-bit system was a game that would later be one that would enjoy this franchise to the very end. A game that kept me playing till I bought the enhanced version for my next nintendo console. That’s correct, super mario bros. 3 is hands down the greatest game I’ve ever played and my all-time favorite game. I have played every version of mario bros. 3: the .

Super mario bros. 3(nintendo entertainment system) by tsakura on september 05, 2010

3(nintendo entertainment system) by trega123 on january 09, 2017

Super mario bros 3 on the virtual console is the reincarnation of the immortal classic that was once on the NES. This game is also the third and final chapter of the main super mario trio on the NES (there was no story but you know what I mean). Super mario bros 3 is acclaimed in both critic and sales wise with countless websites & magazines listing this game as an AAA title and the game listed as one of the biggest selling videogames with more then 18 million copies sold. Absolutely magical

You have no idea how hard it is to review this game without simply acknowledging that this is indeed super mario 3, slap a 5/5 on it and call it a day. And I say this as a person who didn't even play the mario games all that much when I was a kid and shouldn't have any nostalgic ties to the franchise. My relationship with mr. Mario is a troubled one. Unlike everyone in the entire world I did not have a NES growing up so my experience (up until this point) with the mario franchise consists of m.

Kbd here to tell you the good and the bad of super mario bros. 3 in as few words as possible. ;)the good:+ a decent challenge + fun powerups+ robust platforming elementsthe bad:- lacks a typical 'save/load game' system- music can be repetitive - short single player mode - some small graphical glitches - visuals haven't aged very well.
