I went to cherokee for two nights on sunday. I was up early and made it over the mountains in two hours. Rain and fog were constant, but traffic was very light. Harrahs cherokee
Last weekend, my wife and I had a chance to visit harrahs cherokee. This casino is located in the cherokee indian reservation in cherokee, north carolina. It is also situated in the smokey mountains just outside of smokey mountains national park.
The surrounding landscape is jaw dropping beautiful. During our trip we were lucky enough to catch the local foliage in all of its’ fall glory. The blue ridge parkway, which dead ends at the smokey mountain national forest, extends all the way to virginia. It is listed as one of the top 10 drives in the country. I whole heartedly agree. The beauty of the leaves as they turn, the vivid colors and fantastic views cannot be rivaled. You must certainly put this on your bucket list.
We also made the trip to asheville, NC to visit the biltmore, the largest private home in the US. Built by george vanderbilt and complete in 1895, it is stunning in both sheer scale and beauty. Apart from the house itself, the grounds also feature a winery and very scenic drive thought the property.
The casino itself is nothing short of spectacular. Being that it is located within an indian reservation, even with the harrahs name attached, I was expecting the usual small low budget indian casino. How wrong I was! The lobby features several fountains smartly arranged in a circle that provide an interesting diversion for the eye. The casino floor itself is quite substantial with lots of slots and many gaming tables.
After playing a few slot machines, my search for a $15 blackjack table took some time. There were many tables, but, few open seats. I sat thru a couple shoes and started out slightly down. Towards the end of the second shoe, I got on a run and made up the deficit and a $50 profit. Then, I cashed out. I found the wife who was hitting the slots pretty hard. She was playing a zeus slots game and I sat to down next to her at a hearts of venice game.
She ended up around $50 and I won another $15. At this point, after two hours in the casino, we had to leave. Unfortunately, we had my wife’s folks with us and they do not gamble. So, we got back onto the blue ridge parkway to take pictures of more leaves.
On the whole, I highly recommend harrahs cherokee. As fair as the surrounding landscape, it rates right up there with their properties in lake tahoe and new orleans. Things to keep in mind: valet parking costs $12 unless you have enough points on your card to cover it. And, the drinks are not free. You have to pay for them whether you are playing or not. I asked one of the slot hosts about this and was told that they only got permission to sell alcohol a few weeks ago and that they were not allowed to server complimentary drinks yet. They are planning to offer complementary drinks in the future, if they are able to.

Harrah’s cherokee valley river casino & resort review
Harrah’s cherokee valley river is a casino located just outside of murphy, north carolina. Though it is owned by the eastern band of the cherokee indians, it is operated by caesars entertainment through a partnership agreement. The property is fairly new, having opened just a few years ago, on september 28, 2015. It is one of two north carolina casinos that are operated by caesars entertainment and owned by the cherokees with the other property being about an hour away in cherokee, NC.
Harrah’s cherokee valley river is about one hour closer to most parts of atlanta than its sister casino. This helps attract players from northern georgia and chattanooga that can make a day trip work better with the closer casino location.
The property is home to 300 hotel rooms, a food court with six dining options, a diamond lounge and two casino bars that serve cocktails. One of the bars is in a non-smoking part of the casino.

There are 55 live table games, 13 electronic table games and 700 gaming machines made up of video poker and slots. Most areas of the casino permit smoking, but there is a handful of table games and a small slots section located by the food court that are non-smoking.
Pot O’ gold machines

The pay tables on these games are typically lower than the game kings found throughout the casino. However, the jackpots for these games are much higher. Keno players hit the jackpot by making 8 out of 8 or 9, 9 out of 9 or 10 or 10 out of 10. The video poker jackpots of pot O’ gold machines require a royal flush, except in games with a joker where it is four of a kind.
There is a bank of 10 heads-up video blackjack machines on pot O’ gold devices. These are the best video blackjack games in the country. It is single deck that reshuffles every time. The dealer stands on all 17s. Players can double down on 9, 10 and 11 on the first two cards but not after splitting. Pairs may only be split once, split aces may be hit and the player automatically wins if making a six-card hand that does not bust.
If the dealer makes a six-card hand without busting, it must stand with whatever it has. These games require $45 in coin-in for one total rewards point. The betting limits are $2 to $50. All bets on this game must be in $2 increments. That is because the original software is programmed to use dollar coins.

Table games use a formula that computes the average bet size, length of play, speed of game and house edge.

Seven stars is the top tier in total rewards. This is achieved at 150,000 annual points. These players always get the best rooms and never wait in line. There is also early check-in and late checkout. The annual birthday celebration dinner is $500 that can be used at any of the company’s properties. There is also an annual $1,200 caesars vacation available with a $500 dining credit on that trip. Seven stars players can transfer the status to one friend, too.
Active players receive mailers with free play which are sent as tickets that slots accept. However, they can also be printed on the total rewards kiosks. These typically are equal amounts available two or three times a month. There are special free play days, typically on a sunday or monday, where guests can double their free play. There is often a day or two each month with bonus tier or reward credit bonuses.
There is a way to speed up the total rewards ladder. A player that earns 500 tier points in a day receives 125 bonus ones. A player that earns 1,000 in a day receives an additional 1,000. Players that reach 2,500 in a day get a 5,000 tier bonus, while 5,000 tier credits in a day get 10,000. This last example is what total rewards calls “diamond in a day.”

The options are earl of sandwich, panda express, starbucks, papa john’s pizza, arthur treacher’s fish and chips and nathan’s famous. Guests looking for a full-service dining experience will need to travel to murphy, which is five minutes down the road.

There are no amenities at harrah’s cherokee valley river beyond two bars and the diamond lounge. There is a bar in the smoking area and another near the food court. There is also a beverage station by the bus entrance.
The diamond lounge is located between the casino cage and food court. Diamond players receive half off drinks in there. Beer is generally $2, well drinks are $3, with calls and top-shelf liquor being $4 or $5. There are many high-end liquors for sale in the diamond lounge where the discount also applies. It is open from 3 PM to 10 PM on weekdays and 3 PM to midnight on weekends. Food is served from 5 PM to 9 PM daily.

There are 300 hotel rooms at harrah’s cherokee valley river. The available rooms are one king or two queens. The trims are luxury and premium. The premium room includes a sofa with a pull-out bed. All rooms have a safe, mini-refrigerator, hair dryer and television. Wireless internet is available for purchase. Nightly rates start at $99 per night on weeknights and $299 on weekends. It is worth noting that unlike properties in las vegas, there is no resort fee at harrah’s cherokee valley river.

I went to cherokee for two nights on sunday. I was up early and made it over the mountains in two hours. Rain and fog were constant, but traffic was very light. I got there at 8:45, checked my bag at the bell desk, went to the food court on the casino floor and had johnny rocket's bacon, egg, and cheese on an english muffin and an OJ. I was on the floor playing the slots by 9:30.

As I walked around I found several new games. WOZ haunted forest and emerald city, WOZ wicked witch of the west, family guy, star wars trilogy, super monopoly money, and willy wonka!! There were also several versions of the WMS my poker machines (3-play and 5-play, ultimate X, spinning streak). I tried for 14 hours to get on the WOZ and wonka games, but never could do it on sunday. I finally got to play them on monday and a little this morning before leaving. I really like wonka! I only had one decent hit on an oompa loompa random, and only hit the bonus three times for very little, but I really like the game.
Scorpio texted me sunday morning stating she and a friend were coming to see a concert that night. We were able to meet and have dinner together. Thanks, for having dinner with me, scorpio!! It was seafood night at the buffet!
I used $265 FP on sunday, $170 on monday, and $250 on tuesday before leaving. I was able to play a lot for two days, having two hps and cashing out another $1200 on one machine. However, my winning streak at cherokee ended with me losing $115 for the trip. I earned over 2500 tier credits on sunday and a little over 2300 on monday. I only played for about an hour tuesday morning after checking out. Just wanted to use my FP in the HL room (didn't win anything on that one) and play willy wonka and WOZ before everyone started lining up to play!
My cameras were acting up on this trip for some reason. I was able to get a few videos, but, in some cases, all I was able to get was a picture. Security was ever present and I didn't try on several occasions. I was never stopped, but was careful. I know security saw me twice, but no one said anything. My host tracked me down on sunday. I usually don't even bother her, as I don't really require anything and can make my own reservations online. She wants me to call her for any future reservation needs! Yes, I will!! She said she could get me a better room!
Another very good trip for me! I really needed to get away for a couple of days. I was going crazy here at home all the time. I haven't worked in two months and go back to the physical therapist this week and to the doctor next week. I'm soooo bored. Since I only lost a little, I might be able to justify ( in my mind) another trip over the mountains in january or february! :-)
