Slot game statistics

New casino sites to play real money

Unlike new jersey, the nevada gaming control board does not break down its slot statistics by individual properties. Rather, they are classified by area. The terms of the state's compact with the tribes require gaming machines to return a minimum of 80% and a maximum of 100%. However, if a machine is affected by skill, such as video poker or video blackjack, the machines must return a minimum of 83%.

ARIZONA SLOT MACHINE PAYBACK STATISTICS

In mid-1993 arizona’s governor symington signed a compact with the state’s tribes that allowed them to offer slot machines on their reservations.

The compact originally didn’t allow for any table games but in early 2003 blackjack was added as a permissible table game.

Arizona tribes aren’t required to release information on their slot machine percentage paybacks, however, according to the arizona department of gaming, the terms of the compact require each tribes’ machines to return the following minimum and maximum paybacks: video poker and video blackjack - 83% to 100%, slot machines - 80% to 100%, keno - 75% to 100%. Each tribe is free to set its machines to pay back anywhere within those limits.

ARKANSAS SLOT MACHINE PAYBACK STATISTICS

Arkansas has two pari-mutuel facilities featuring “electronic games of skill,” which are defined as “games played through any electronic device or machine that affords an opportunity for the exercise of skill or judgment where the outcome is not completely controlled by chance alone.”

The games offered are video poker, video blackjack, and “skill” slots where you have two opportunities to spin the reels. The “skill” factor comes into play because after seeing the results of your first spin you then have to decide whether to keep none, one, two, or all three of the symbols on each reel before you spin them again. Gaming regulations require that all of the electronic games of skill must return a minimum of 83%.

For the one year period from july 1, 2018, through june 30, 2019, the average gaming machine’s return at oaklawn was 92.81% and at southland, it was 92.72%

CALIFORNIA SLOT MACHINE PAYBACK STATISTICS

California’s indian casinos are legally allowed to offer electronic gaming machines, blackjack, and other house-banked card games. The games of craps and roulette are not permitted. However, some casinos do offer modified versions of craps and roulette that are played with cards rather than dice or roulette wheels.

Most california card rooms also offer some form of player-banked blackjack, but because they are prohibited by law from playing blackjack, the game is usually played to 22 rather than 21. Additionally, players must pay a commission to the house on every hand they play. The amount will vary depending on the rules of the house but, generally, it’s about two to five percent of the total amount bet. There are about 90 card rooms in california and you can see a listing of them on the internet at http://www.Cgcc.Ca.Gov

California’s tribes aren’t required to release information on their slot machine percentage paybacks and the state of california does not require any minimum returns.

FLORIDA SLOT MACHINE PAYBACK STATISTICS

Florida has three forms of casino gambling: casino boats, indian casinos and gaming machines at pari-mutuels in two south florida counties.

The casino boats offer gamblers the opportunity to board ships that cruise offshore where casino gambling is legal. From the east coast, the boats sail three miles out into the atlantic ocean and from the west coast the boats travel nine miles out into the gulf of mexico. Since the casino boats travel in international waters they are free from regulations and the machines can be set to pay back whatever the operator wants without regard to a minimum payback percentage.

Florida has eight indian gaming locations. The seminole tribe has seven and the eighth is on the miccosukee tribe’s reservation.

The seminoles signed a compact with the state that allows them to offer both class II and traditional class III gaming machines. As part of their compact, five seminole casinos are also allowed to offer the following:

  • Blackjack

  • Baccarat

  • Mini-baccarat

  • Three-card poker

  • Let it ride

  • Pai gow poker

The miccosukee tribe has not signed a compact and they only offer class II gaming machines at their casino.

Class II video gaming devices look like slot machines but are actually bingo games and the spinning reels are for “entertainment purposes only.” no public information is available concerning the payback percentages on any gaming machines in florida’s indian casinos.

The other games allowed in all indian casinos include

  • High-stakes bingo

  • Video pull tabs

  • Poker

All of the casinos are open 24 hours (except big cypress) and all offer bingo except for both seminole hard rock casinos and the seminole casino coconut creek. The minimum gambling age is 18 at all indian casinos for bingo or poker and 21 for electronic gaming machines.

Broward county (home county of fort lauderdale) and miami-dade county both have four pari-mutuel facilities that each offer electronic gaming machines, but no table games.

Best payout slot machines by software provider

Whilst our comprehensive table of payout percentages for slot machines is undoubtedly illuminating, we have gone one step further in trying to help you find the best online slots.

This graph shows the eight main software providers for online slots and the average payout percentage across all of their games. Essentially it shows you which providers apply the smallest ‘house edge’ and thus produce the best slot machines for players.

RTP % by slot manufacturer

There are a couple of things that really stand out when you look closely at the graph:

  • Amaya slots are by far and away the worst slot machines for payouts with a 92% RTP average (more on that later).

  • Netent make the most player friendly slot games averaging a 96.51% payout percentage.

  • The majority of companies are within 1% of each other setting an online industry standard of about 95% for slot payouts.

  • Online slots have a comparatively impressive payout percentage across the board as compared to land-based slot machines (85% average), with upwards of 90% representing a kind of industry standard.

We’ve also built specific pages which breaks down the games offered by each brand:

Why are amaya payouts so bad?

Amaya lags quite significantly behind the others with a payout percentage of 92%… why are they so far behind the rest?

Amaya are a canadian company based in montreal and after their purchase of the parent company of pokerstars and full tilt poker in 2014, became the world’s largest public listed online gambling games company.

It may be therefore, that as market leaders there is less pressure on amaya to match or better their competitors’ payout percentages. Amaya have also recently purchased several other slots providers including aristrocrat and chartwell. Both companies were known for their low return to player percentages and therefore could be dragging the amaya averages down.

However at the core of this issue is the fact that amaya are a major player in the creation of software for real world slot machines and as such clearly want to bring the lower land based percentages to the online scene (how very noble of them indeed).

Slot machine payouts vs other casino games

Plenty of useful conclusions can be drawn from simply looking at the payout percentages of different slots games and software providers.

However… it is also important to look at the RTP percentages of slots as compared to other online casino games.

Keno is the obvious place to start when looking at this data, as its RTP percentage is significantly lower than any other at 73% (avoid at all costs folks). Blackjack has a much higher average RTP percentage of 99.50% and when played correctly is the most player friendly casino game there is.

It’s pretty difficult to land a significant payday playing blackjack. You’ve got to get on a seriously hot streak which lasts a significant amount of time to make a lot of money. Slots machines, although with an average RPT of 95.67%, do offer the chance to score that big payout and it could be argued that sacrificing a bit of house edge to get that opportunity is worth it.

As a side note blackjack’s very low house edge is why it’s pretty much always excluded from wagering requirements for online casino bonuses. With the bonus money added to expected returns when clearing the bonus it can actually produce an edge for the player if perfect strategy is employed.

How do RTP percentages work?

RTP or payout percentages are a representation of the average rate at which a game – be it slots or otherwise – pays out to players, as compared to the total amount that players stake. In general, online slots games have a payout percentage of around 95% and in the simplest possible terms this means that on average the game will pay out £95 for every £100 staked on it.

That does not mean that every player is guaranteed £95 worth of payout if and when they stake £100 however, as the percentages are based upon a very high number of spins. General probability and more simply the law of averages, means that an individual player could still win far more than they stake or lose considerably more than 5% in one session or over an extended period of time.

What it does mean is that on average the online casino or game provider will take 5% of the money staked on the game for themselves, and that is called the ‘house edge’.

How are slot machine payouts calculated?

For players… RTP = (total amount returned to players) / (total amount bet by players). That calculation will always return the result in the form of a decimal (e.G. 0.95) and it can then simply be translated into a percentage, which in that example would be 95%.

For the casinos… the number of symbols built into the game, the amount of combinations of those symbols which provide a payout, the value of those payouts and the probability of those combinations occurring combine to produce the games overall RTP %.

Why do slots have different payouts?

Online slot games software providers have no real restrictions placed upon them in terms of the initial RTP percentage they build into their games. The UK gambling commission nor any other regulatory body of note impose a statutory minimum upon online slots games and as such the providers can set the level themselves.

Levels are determined by the paytable and symbols in the game, these differ from game to game and therefore payouts differ as well. They are set to make machines attractive to players whilst still providing a house edge for the casino. The best slots from a players point of view are usually always those with the highest possible payout percentages.

Do online slots or land based have better payouts?

The best slot machine games, where payouts are concerned, are always online based. The percentage falls dramatically live as compared with online.

Where the general online average RTP percentage tends to hover around 95%, land based casinos can – and often do – offer percentages as low as 75%. That figure in fact, is one which is often linked to machines in las vegas where the state imposed minimum is indeed only 75%.

Other global regulatory bodies however, do impose a more stringent minimum on physical slot machines, with the state of new jersey requiring 83% and the state of mississippi 80% for example.

In the UK meanwhile, the UK gambling commission does not actually impose any statutory minimum. It does dictate however, that all machines must display their RTP percentages clearly to players and that does tend to prevent casinos and bookmakers from allowing the percentages to fall too low as to make games unfair.

Can casinos change payout percentages?

The answer to this question tends to be no, but the explanation of that answer differs in terms of live and online slots games.

Online casinos

To deal with online games first, as we have mentioned online there is no statutory minimum RTP percentage which allows providers to set their own levels. What they cannot do however, is to routinely alter or skew those percentages or to lie about them to their customers.

This is prevented by the necessity of online slots providers to have their games regularly tested by independent testing boards. These boards must themselves by licensed by the relevant legislative bodies and will check that a provider’s games generate random combinations, are not biased towards or away from certain combinations and deliver the RTP percentage that they claim. If you stick to online gaming sites which are legit and registered with testing boards such as ecogra in the UK, itech labs in australia or gaming laboratories international in the USA therefore, you can be sure that the games have fair and consistent RTP percentages.

Live casinos

With physical slot machines, the payout percentage tends to be set when the imbedded software is originally written and as such can only be altered by the physical switching of the software or firmware.

That is a time consuming and difficult process, and is one that is also often subject to different rules according to the jurisdiction in which the machine is operated. In the US state of new jersey for example, each machine is fitted with a tamper proof seal to ensure that any switch of software can only be carried out in the presence of a gaming control board official. All of that, together with the fact that it is an almost universally applied rule that the RTP percentage for a machine must be clearly displayed to players, makes it very difficult therefore for casinos and other slots providers to change percentages whenever they want.

But essentially in a live environment it can be done, it’s just quite difficult to do it.

Configurations
there is a wide variety of the slot machines with regard to parametric design and rules. The configuration of a slot machine is specified by the configuration of its display and the configuration of its reels.
The display of a slot machine shows the outcomes of the reels in groups of spots (spot refers to a unit part of a reel holding one symbol, visible through its window; a spot on the display corresponds to a stop of the reel; a window can show one or more spots) having a certain shape and arrangement. The configuration of the display can be defined and modeled mathematically through a cartesian grid of integers, where the gridʼs points stand for the reel spots/stops and a (pay)line is a finite set of minimum 3 points that can be connected through a path linking successively neighboring points of that set. The length of a line is the cardinality of that set. Most of the slot machines have the display arranged as a rectangular grid. Lines can be of any shape and complexity and have all kinds of geometrical and topological properties. There are horizontal, vertical, oblique, or broken lines; symmetric, transversal lines; triangular, trapezoidal, zigzag, stair, or double-stair lines.
The distribution and arrangement of the symbols on each reel is also part of the configuration of a slot machine. On virtual slot machines and slot games in new slot sites, the physical configuration is replaced by parametric constraints upon the RNG (random number generator).
For the probability calculus in slots, only a part of the parameters and properties of the entire configuration of a slot machine do count [. ]. Read more on configurations

Winning combinations, slots events
any winning rule on a payline is expressed through a combination of symbols (for instance, the specific combination

) or a type of combinations of symbols (for instance, any bar-symbol twice or any triple of symbols) and any outcome is a specific combination of stops on that line. Therefore, the combination of stops should be naturally taken as an elementary event of the probability field. We have
Slot game statistics, slot game statistics.
possible combinations of stops in case A and
Slot game statistics, slot game statistics.
possible combinations of symbols on a payline of length n across n reels. In case B, we have the same

number of possible combinations of symbols and

possible combinations of stops for that payline of length n.

With regard to the complexity of the events in respect to the ease of the probability computations, we have:

Simple events. These are the events related to one line, which are types of combinations of stops expressed through specific numbers of identical symbols (instances). For example,

on a payline of length 3 is a simple event, defined as "two seven and one orange symbols".

Complex events of type 1. These are unions of simple events related to one line. For instance, the event any triple on a payline of length 3 of a fruit machine is a complex event of type 1, as being the union of the simple events

, and so on (consider all the symbols of that machine). Any double or two cherries or two oranges or at least one cherry are also complex events of type 1.

Complex events of type 2. These are events that are types of combinations of stops expressed through specific numbers of identical symbols, related to several lines. For instance,

on at least one payline is also a complex event of type 2.

Complex events of type 3. These are unions of events that are types of combinations of stops expressed through specific numbers of identical symbols (like the complex events of type 2), related to several lines. For instance, any triple on paylines 1 or 2 is a complex event of type 3. At least one cherry on at least one payline is also a complex event of type 3.

General formulas of the probability of the winning events related to one payline

For an event E related to a line of length n, the general formula of the probability of E is:

Slot game statistics, slot game statistics.
In case A and
Slot game statistics, slot game statistics.
in case B, (1)

Where F(E) is the number of combinations of stops favorable for the event E to occur.

For an event E expressed through the number of instances of each symbol on a payline in case A, formula (1) is equivalent to:

Slot game statistics, slot game statistics.
(2)

Where

Slot game statistics, slot game statistics.
is the number of instances of
Slot game statistics, slot game statistics.
, and so on,
Slot game statistics, slot game statistics.
is the number of instances of
Slot game statistics, slot game statistics.
(
Slot game statistics, slot game statistics.
).

Formula (2) can be directly applied for winning events defined through the distribution of all symbols on the payline, in case A. These are simple events. For more complex events, we must apply the general formula (1), which reverts to counting the number of favorable combinations of stops F(E), or, for particular situations, apply formula (2) several times and add the results.
In case B, the number of variables is larger and therefore most of the explicit formulas from case B are too overloaded. We take here one particular type of events for which we present its probability formula in terms of basic probabilities, namely the events expressed through a number of instances of one symbol. If E is the event exactly m instances of S (

), then:

Slot game statistics, slot game statistics.
(3)

Where

and

are the basic probabilities (the probability of symbol S occurring on reel number j, respectively k).

Probability calculus tools for events related to several lines
for events related to several lines, other properties of probability are used (for instance, the inclusion-exclusion principle), along with formulas (1) and (2) and some approximation methods necessary for the ease of computations. When estimating the probability of an event related to several lines, some topological properties of that group of lines do count; for instance, the independence of the lines:

We call two lines independent if they do not contain stops of the same reel. This means that the outcome on one line does not depend on the outcome of the other and vice versa. Two lines that are not independent will be called non-independent.

For two non-independent lines, the outcome of one is influenced (partially or totally) by the outcome of the other. This definition can be extended to several lines (m), as follows: we call m lines independent if every pair of lines from them are independent. From probabilistic point of view, any two or more events each related to a line from a group of independent lines are independent, in the sense of the definition of independence of events from probability theory.

, and therefore
Slot game statistics, slot game statistics.
,

, and

, are non-independent, since within each of the mentioned groups we have stops of the same reel on different lines. In such configuration, there is no group of independent lines, regardless the shape or other properties of the lines.

An immediate consequence of the definition of independent lines is that if two lines intersect each other (that is, they share common stops), they are non-independent, so any group of lines containing them will be non-independent. Another consequence is that if two lines are independent, they do not intersect each other.
If two lines do not intersect each other, they are not necessarily independent. For instance, take lines

Slot game statistics, slot game statistics.
and
Slot game statistics, slot game statistics.
in the last figure. On the contrary, lines
Slot game statistics, slot game statistics.
and
Slot game statistics, slot game statistics.
not intersecting each other in the last but one figure are independent.

The non-independent lines (intersecting or non-intersecting) for which there are non-shared stops belonging to the same reels (like lines

Slot game statistics, slot game statistics.
and
Slot game statistics, slot game statistics.
in the last figure) are called linked lines. For events related to linked lines, the probability estimations are only possible if we know the arrangements of the symbols on the reels, not only their distributions.

All probabilities were worked out under the following assumptions:
- the reels spin independently;
- a payline does not contain two stops of the same reel (it crosses over the reels without overlapping them); this reverts to the fact that any m events, each one related to one stop of the payline, are independent of each other;
- each reel contains p symbols; this is actually a convention: if a symbol does not appear on a reel, we could simply take its distribution on that reel as being zero.

Given parameters
of course, any practical application can be fulfilled only if we know in advance the parameters of the given slot machine, that is, the numbers of stops of the reels and the symbol distributions on the reels. All the probability formulas and tables of values are ultimately useless without this information.
In the book the mathematics of slots: configurations, combinations, probabilities you will find explained some methods of estimating these parameters based on empirical data collected through statistical observation and physical measurements. Of course, taking into account the incomputable error ranges of such approximations, any credible information regarding these parameters should prevail over these methods of estimating them.
The mathematics department of infarom will launch soon the project probability sheet for any slot game, dealing with collecting statistical data from slot players, using the data to estimate the parameters of the slot machine, refining the estimations with the newly collected data and computing the probabilities and other statistical indicators attached to the payout schedule of the slot machine, in order to provide the so-called PAR sheet of any slot game on the market. Contact us with subject "slots data project" if you want to be part of our future project.

Practical applications and numerical probabilities

This section is dedicated to practical results, in which the general formulas are particularized in order to provide results for the most common categories of slot games and winning events. The practical results are presented as both specific formulas, ready for inputting the parameters of the slot game, and computed numerical results, where the specific formulas allow the generation of two-dimensional tables of values. The collection of results hold for winning combinations with no wild symbols (jokers) and is partial. You can find the complete collection of practical results in the book the mathematics of slots: configurations, combinations, probabilities, for 3-reel, 5-reel, 9-reel, and 16-reel slot machines.

3-reel slot machines
the 3-reel slot machines could have the following common configurations of the display: 1 x 3, 2 x 3, 3 x 3. The standard length of a payline is 3. The common winning events on a payline are:

On a 3-reel 2 x 3- or 3 x 3-display slot machine, any two paylines are linked; therefore we cannot estimate the probabilities of the winning events related to several lines.

16-reel slot machines
the 16-reel slot machines usually have the 4 x 4 configuration of the display. The standard length of a payline is 4, but it could also have the length 3, 6, 7, or 8. The 16-reel 4 x 4-display slot machine could have 8 to 22 paylines of length 4, as follows: 4 horizontal, 4 vertical, 2 oblique (diagonal), or 12 trapezoidal lines. It could also have 4 transversal stair lines of length 7, 12 double-stair lines of length 6, or 10 double-stair lines of length 8. It could also have 4 oblique lines of length 3.

RTP percentages: slots vs other casino games

*graph assumes a player is playing the most favourable variation of the game and is employing perfect strategy.

All gaming machines are designed to pay the player back a percentage of what is played. The amounts vary from machine to machine and from casino to casino. All machines have one thing in common: the longer the machine is played, the closer the actual payouts will be to the theoretical results.

Slot machines use a random selection process to achieve a set of theoretical odds. Random selection means that each time the lever is pulled and the reels are set in motion a combination of symbols are randomly selected. The "random" aspect ensures that each pull of the handle is independent from every other pull, so that the results of the previous pull, and the one before that, have no effect on the current one.

The theoretical odds are built into the design and program of the machine, and it is possible to calculate the exact payout percentage for any machine over the long-term.

Except for the video slots, slot machines have wheels called reels with symbols printed on each wheel. Each reel symbol represents a stop which may come to rest on the payline, and may or may not be part of a combination of symbols resulting in a payoff.

The likelihood of winning any payoff on any slot machine is related to the number of reels and the number of symbols on each reel.

The most common type of mechanical slot machine has three reels with twenty symbols on each reel. To calculate the total number of combinations of symbols on this machine, we multiple the number of stops (symbols) on each reel by the number of stops on each of the remaining reels. For a three reel machine with twenty stops per reel, we have 20 x 20 x 20 = 8,000 combinations of slot symbols.

If a jackpot offered on this machine pays on 7 7 7 and only one 7 symbol is on each reel, then the probability of hitting this jackpot is 1/20 x 1/20 x 1/20 or one in 8,000. If two 7 symbols are on one reel, then our calculation is 2/20 x 1/20 x 1/20 for a probability of 1/4,000 of hitting the jackpot.

Likewise, we can calculate the probability of any combination of symbols hitting if we know the number of times each symbol appears on each reel.

When mechanical slots dominated, it was not too difficult to count the symbols on each reel and determine exactly the payoff of a given machine. With microprocessor controlled slots this task has become almost impossible, as the number of stops per reel can be as many as 256. To determine the payoffs of such a machine would require significant reverse engineering and is beyond the scope of almost every player.

The number of reels has a greater effect on the probabilities than the number of symbols per reel. If we compare a machine with 32 stops per reel and 3 reels, with a 22 stop per reel machine and 4 reels, you will see the tremendous difference another reel makes:

32 stop, 3 reel: 32 x 32 x 32 = 32,768 combinations

22 stop, 4 reel: 22 x 22 x 22 x 22 = 234,256 combinations

If we consider a 5 reel machine with 32 stops per reel, we find over 33 million combinations!

Every slot machine has a predetermined payout percentage. When you hear things like "our slots pay back 98.3%" this means that over the long-term for every dollar inserted in the machine, it will return 98.3 cents. Conversely, we could state that as for every dollar played, the casino will retain 1.7 cents. These percentages only hold true over very long-term play consisting of hundreds of thousands or even millions of plays.

Many people misinterpret these percentages and think that if they play with $100.00 on a 98.3% payback machine that they can only lose $1.70. There are a couple of things wrong with this line of thinking. First, theoretical percentages will be attained only over long periods of play. Over a few dozen, or even a few hundred rolls, the payback percentage will vary greatly. Secondly, if a person brings $100.00 for slot play, he or she usually will not limit his or her play to inserting this amount of money into the machine only one time. Most people will buy twenty dollars worth of tokens and continue to play with this money until it is gone. After inserting the first round of coins in the machine, they will continue playing with any coins left in the tray, and they will continue this pattern until no coins are left. And then they wonder how it was possible for a 98.3% slot to take all of their money.

The answer is that the casino continues to extract its percentage on every coin inserted into the machine. The player will not limit his play to twenty dollars or one hundred dollars but will continue to redeposit coins. The machine will, at least over the long-term, continue to grind away at all money played.

Table 6 shows the devastating effect the house edge can have on the player's bankroll. This table compares slot hold percentages of from two percent to fifteen percent for ten rounds of play, starting with $100.

The house edge at slot machines isn't based on how lucky the players are, it is based on the pre-programmed electronic software used. And, that house edge varies from casino to casino and from geographic location and state to state.

Don't be fooled by a billboard that says "our slots pay 99%" because that only pertains to a small number of machines, not the casino's overall house edge. All video slot machines (including poker) use a random number generator to provide accurate odds for the player and the house.

The number of winning hands (symbols) in any program is mathematically proven before the slots hit the gaming floor, and while the odds vary for each player (because this really is gambling), overall, the anticipated house edge will eventually be achieved.

The house edge at slots

Each gaming jurisdiction requires all slot machines to be registered and all slot manufacturers must submit their programming and math charts to the state gaming office, such as the nevada gaming control board. While the state may only require a minimum payback of 86-percent, most video poker and slot machines pay more. The average payback in nevada is lowest on penny slots at about 90-percent. Dollar slots and some deuces-wild poker machines have the highest payback at nearly 99-percent.

Of course just because a machine has a payback of 99 percent does not mean you will win back $99 for every $100 you play through the machine. That payback amount is an average. Over the course of an evening of gambling, you might lose $500 or win $5,000. That's the beauty of the gamble, right? And, the casino doesn't care either way, because they win an average of whatever their house edge is over the course of the month.

How does that 99-percent work for you? Aside from the ups and downs of jackpots and dry spells, your entertainment dollar is going to be based on how long you play. If you play a machine that takes $3 per spin and you pull the handle 10-times an hour, you are playing $3 x 10 x 60 = $1,800 in action. At 99-percent house edge, your play costs $18 an hour. Some nights you'll go home ready to kick the wall, and other nights you be singing a happy tune because you hit a jackpot and skated out with hundreds. That's gambling.

Play within your means

As a general rule, the higher denomination slot machines have a greater overall payback percentage that the lower ones. That's great for those with a healthy bankroll, but you'll need to play the games that offer you the best bang for the buck. The worst thing a player can do is to play any game for more money than they can afford to lose or at a higher denomination than their bankroll will handle.

Another consideration is making sure you can qualify for any bonus screen or royal flush payoff. If you want to wile away the hours playing a single nickel in a machine, that's great. Enjoy. You won't win or lose much and you'll probably go home happier than most players. But your play comes with a catch!

That catch is that the house edge provided for each machine includes the big jackpots (such as a royal flush), and if you play below the minimum to reach the bonus screen, the house edge is much higher! You won't lose much, but you'll never win more than a couple of dollars.

The best option

The best option is to play the games you enjoy most, and make sure you read the help screen so you know how many credits it takes to qualify for at least the lowest progressive jackpot and the bonus screen (or royal flush at video poker). As a recreational player, your first goal is to have fun. If you only visit the casino occasionally the overall payback of the machine won't make much of a difference. If you visit regularly, make sure you join the player's club and play within your means!

Gamers and gaming behavior
in 2015, 49 percent of american consumers said they had played a video game at least once in their life. Men are still the dominant gender among gamers, and while there was a time when the proportion of female gamers had seen an increase, it seems that men are reclaiming their majority as gamers. The average american gamer spent nearly 29 hours with a game console each month. On a weekly basis, 27 percent of console users spent an average of three to five hours playing games on this device. Despite the fact that 2012 saw rapid decrease in consumer expenditures to 20.77 billion U.S. Dollars, from 24.82 billion in 2011 or 25.13 billion in 2010, recent data on consumer spending on gaming shows that the industry might be picking up again, as 2016 was to see the figure grow to 30.4 billion U.S. Dollars.

Statista’s exclusive global consumer survey holds further information on the video gaming behavior of adult internet users in the united states. The comprehensive catalog of consumer research provides detailed figures on device preferences, gamer spending habits, commonly used streaming platforms as well as gaming intensity and weekly hours devoted to the activity. For more in-depth insights each data point is broken down by various target groups to better portray specific gaming habits. All this and much more can be explored in the global consumer survey.
