Why is there the need for a slot machine vs video lottery terminals debate? Aren’t they one and the same?

Though you would be forgiven for thinking this, the truth is that there is a completely different video lottery terminals definition, so you need to be informed as to what the difference is if you want to make the most out of your gaming experience.

In this article we cover what you definitely need to know:

  • Major difference – machine class

  • What is a slot machine

  • What is a video lottery terminal

  • Why do you need to know the difference

  • Pro tips: hot & cold periods and round playing

In fact, there is also a pretty big historical timeline difference with regard to slot machine vs video lottery terminals. Slot machines, at least in their very earliest prototypes, have been around for over a century. Video lottery terminals, on the other hand, are a more recent installment to the western casino world, with the earliest machines being legalised and finding their way to casinos in the 1970s – specifically in montana, nevada, and new jersey.

As a result of this and perhaps other factors, slot machines are generally much more common across the board. That doesn’t mean that people should assume they know everything they need to know about slot machines, although there’s little doubt that information about video lottery terminals is less widespread.

That’s why we’re here to help you distinguish slot machine vs video lottery terminals. A popular slot game is thunderstruck II and it’s pretty representative of all slot games because it uses a random number generator to determine wins, but more about that later.

Your goal by the end of this should be to understand the advantages and disadvantages of both, as well as why and when to pick slot machine vs video lottery terminals when you next visit a casino.

A question of class?

One of the most crucial differences is that slot machines are known as class III machines, while video lottery terminals are considered to be class II machines. This distinction does not mean there’s a difference in quality – only in gameplay.

Knowing the basic difference between the two will help when distinguishing the finer details of slot machine vs video lottery terminals, and the basic difference is this:

Class II machines are pre-programed. In other words, the winning numbers are determined by the machine before the game has even been played. Class III machines, on the other hand, operate more overtly on the basis on RNG (random number generation) software, so there’s more of a prominent gameplay element.

Despite this distinction, you might not even realise whether the machine you’re playing on is a class II or class III type machine, though knowing this difference will help you choose your machines more carefully, as you’ll soon find out.

What you probably already know – A slot machine definition

Because of their much more obvious widespread popularity, chances are that you’re a lot more familiar with slot machines, but we reckon that it is still important you know exactly what you’re getting into every time you hit up your nearest casino. A slot machine is what is typically considered to be the traditional ‘vegas-style’ machine.

As has been said, the outcome you’ll get on slot machines is randomised. The software tells the machine when to stop, and if the symbols line up as you want them to, then you’ve got a winning payout.

Still, there are other important slot machine vs video lottery terminal distinctions, such as that slot machines work in isolation unless linked in progressive networks for jackpot purposes.

What is also important to know is that if players choose to play again, their next round is not affected in any way by the previous one. A classic slot, now with multiple versions, is age of the gods, or try other no deposit casino bonuses!

What you might not know – A video lottery terminals definition

The biggest distinction between a slot machine vs video lottery terminals, and the one that makes all the difference, is how the winners are determined.

With a video lottery terminal, what you are doing is actually betting on the outcome of the game. Think of the word ‘lottery’, as it perfectly describes what happens. You bet on a possible outcome, and hope for the best. If you do win, you have to announce it in order to claim your winnings.

When looking at the video lottery terminals definition, it’s good to understand that when you enter a game, it already has a predetermined number of winners. These may not be announced in every round, but will eventually come up. Despite the outcome being predetermined, it’s important to understand that it’s still random, and is not manipulated in any way by a human element.

This is why video lottery terminals are often considered to resemble computer generated scratch-off ticket systems. When you buy such a ticket, you’ve won or lost from the moment of purchase, but you won’t know this until you’ve played.

Why is knowing the difference between slot machine vs video lottery terminals even important?

This isn’t a slot machine vs video lottery terminals debate in the sense that you need to swear your allegiance to either type of machine, but you should know when it pays you to go for either option.

Because of the way they’re programmed, video lottery terminals lend themselves best to games like bingo, lotto, keno, and so on. In other words, games that have nothing to with any kind of interactive gameplay.

Why? Think about a casino classic like video poker. The results are random here still, but is a definite element of gameplay involved. You need to know how to play poker. On video lottery terminals definition of this sort becomes negated and superficial.

To be fair, slots machines are often completely independent of a real gameplay element, but still tend to have more interactive features. Take bonus games for example, where prizes can be determined based on choices you make, such as flipping a virtual coin to double up your wins. This kind of nuance would be lost on a class II machine.

Other useful things to know about slot machine vs video lottery terminals

Regardless of how you gravitate with regard to slot machine vs video lottery terminals, both types of machines come with their own myths that are necessary to dispel.

Slot machines in particular are often thought to have ‘hot’ and ‘cold’ periods, in which is it becomes more or less likely to pay out. These are often terms used in reference to jackpots. People argue that after a jackpot is hit it is unlikely that another one will be any time soon after.

The reality of it is that you’ll never know when a slot machine is going to pay out. Though slot machines can indeed have different rates of volatility, this is separate to the idea that there are different periods in which machines are more generous.

People often have a bit of a warped video lottery terminals definition which includes the idea that chances of winning increase the more one plays. The reasoning behind this is that if playing a round is akin to playing a ‘scratch ticket’ of sorts, then decreases the metaphorical tickets increases odds until a win is finally announced.

Again, this simply isn’t true. Wins are predetermined for each round, which also means that they are reset for each new one. Energy casino has an impressive selection of class III slot machines and some no deposit bonus cash you can claim to get a solid slot-warm-up.

Slot volatility

The word volatile as applied to a slot machine basically refers to the amount of risk inherent to a specific game. It is used to describe how often and how much you can expect to win during your playing sessions. Some games can present long dry spells with occasional big wins. Likewise, these games can often feature a large number of big wins in a short period of time. These are known as high volatility slots. The opposite is true of low volatility slots. In these, you'll score winning paylines frequently, but more often than not, the payouts will be on the smaller side.

High volatility slots

Higher volatility equates to higher risk. Because payouts, while larger, are fewer and farther between, you can sometimes end up clicking the "spin" button, watching your balance dwindle, with not a lot to show for it. That is, until everything lines up perfectly and bam! You've won an enormous payout that made the long dry spell worth it. These are popular with players who prefer games that offer the chance for big wins. One of my favorite slots with high volatility is the book of ra slot by novomatic.

When should you play a high volatility slot?

It's best to choose high volatility games only when you have a lot of time and a lot of cash on your hands. You have to be rather patient, satisfied with not seeing a lot of action while you wait for the big bonus features to hit at just the right time to replenish your bankroll.

It's also good if your budget has a lot of cushion and you don't mind walking away from the game once you've spent the amount you intended to. For a lot of people, the thrill of chasing the huge win is worth the satisfaction of finally landing it, and this requires patience. High volatility games were designed for just that kind of slot experience.

The last thing to mention is that many of these games can offer huge wins and payouts. I've played numerous games where I've hit big wins several times shortly after sitting down to play. Obviously this doesn't happen all the time, but for players can afford it, higher volatility games are generally going to be a bit more fun.

Slot Machine Slang - A Definitive Slots Glossary, slot game definition.

The book of ra slot by novomatic is infamous among slot players for it's high volatility

Low volatility slots

On the opposite side of the coin, lower volatility games equate to lower risk. The payouts on low volatility slots are smaller but alot more frequent, and there's not a lot of boredom in this type of game. Little wins seem to pop up every couple of spins, and the time slips away because you're so entertained by all the bonus features and animations holding your attention. That's not to say that large wins are impossible on these games - they can and do happen. It's just not on the same scale as the wins available on higher volatility games.

How to determine volatility

Casino game designers aren't eager to give out this information, but volatility usually becomes obvious after spending some time playing a particular slot. Most slot enthusiasts find that they're more drawn to one type over the other, so one isn't necessarily "good" while the other is "bad". Whether you like high or low volatility slots is truly a matter of personal preference and gambling style.

Because volatility can be determined through play, it's recommended to play for free before jumping in and risking real money. Another way to have at least some idea of volatility is to look at the game's paytable. If really high prizes are offered, that's a sign that the game is medium-to-high volatility because it's certainly not going to award these huge prizes frequently.

Volatility vs variance

Sometimes you'll see the term slot variance instead of slot volatility. Don't worry that this is another term you'll have to learn about - the two refer to exactly the same thing, which is how often and how much a slot pays out and the player's total risk in choosing this game.

Volatility in a nutshell

Though personal preference is important, the bottom line in choosing high or low volatility slots should be one's slots bankroll. If there's money to spare, try your hand at the higher-risk slots. But folks with a lower bankroll looking to be entertained for longer with a smaller budget should probably stick to the quick rewards of a lower-variance slot.

What does RTP mean?

Essentially, RTP refers to the return to player from a particular slot or casino game. In some ways, it’s the opposite of the house edge. For example, the slot game starburst has an RTP of 96.1%. This means that the house edge will be 3.9%. Overall, the RTP is connected to the amount a player is expected to receive back from what they bet.

Don’t take this literally and believe that, for every £10 you stake, you are therefore going to win back £9.61. If this were the case, then the entire practice of gambling would be so predictable – and lose you money over the long run – that people would never bother playing. In reality, a player could stake £10, then receive a huge win. Or they could lose everything. This means that RTP isn’t as black and white as it seems. Let’s take a closer look.

How does theoretical RTP work?

Whenever you see an RTP percentage displayed on a game, such as a video slot, this refers to something commonly known as the theoretical RTP. When a slot is being created, the developers will make this figure part of the essence of the game. Every time the reels spin, the results will be determined by an RNG, or random number generator. These results are completely random, and cannot be rigged or guessed. A better description of an RNG, however, would be to call it a pseudo random number generator. If the results were completely random, this would mean that a casino operator would have no way of ensuring they would make money from the enterprise. Consequently, a code is built into this pseudo random sequence of number generations, which will ensure that a house edge is part of an unlimited number of spins. To put this concept into practice, it’s best to go back to the starburst slot example. Whenever you spin the reels, you will know there is a variance every time. You could land a big win, or lose everything. But if you keep spinning, and do so for a very long time – in fact, if you never stop – the average RTP will edge closer and closer to that figure of 96.1%.

Does this mean RTP is inaccurate?

The performance of slots was previously only required to be tested before their release, as before september 2016, regulators would only demand the RTP be examined once in the run-up to being released to the public. However, since this date, the UK gambling commission has required operators to monitor the ongoing performance of their slots. This is because the commission stated it was possible that developers could have created games which had an RTP that went down over time, which would in turn benefit the operator by providing an increasing house edge. To achieve this, developers could include a hidden code or similar during the creation of the slot game. As a result, this leads to the concept of actual RTP, and how this can be combined with theoretical RTP.

How does actual RTP work?

The best way to demonstrate actual RTP is to use an example, such as a casino overseeing the RTP for the starburst slot. The theoretical RTP is 96.1%, and the operator wishes to test this figure against the end of the month which has just concluded. When the site looks at the numbers, they will see that they built up £200,000 in turnover for this game from player bets. Players won a total of £189,00, meaning that the site made £11,000 in profit. To do the maths and work out the actual RTP, you would need to divide 189,000 by 200,000. The answer is 0.945, which translates to 94.5% RTP. While this is beneficial for the casino, as they have gained over 1.5% more profit than usual, it means the players are not getting the return that the theoretical RTP said they would. This form of variation is not unusual by any stretch of the imagination, and the more time that goes by, the closer to the theoretical RTP this game will get.

Slot Machine Slang - A Definitive Slots Glossary, slot game definition.

How is slot volatility connected to RTP?

It isn’t just the RTP that affects a player’s experience with slot games – it’s the volatility, or variance, too. In essence, two slots may have the same RTP, but one could be high variance while the other is low. High variance means that the slot will pay out huge amounts occasionally, while low variance means that smaller wins are gained more often. When a casino operator oversees how a slot is performing, they will take the volatility into consideration as well as the RTP. If you know how often payouts occur, and how big they are, this helps to explain the overall performance in terms of RTP. If it’s a high volatility slot, the results will be more drastic, and vice versa. This means that an operator can create a scale which factors in this variance in results. If the RTP is within a high threshold and a low threshold of the slot’s theoretical RTP, it can be deemed a permissible result. The threshold will be looser for higher thresholds and tighter for low variance slots. That being said, the longer the monitoring period lasts, the closer its expected that these parameters will get smaller, edging further and further towards the theoretical RTP.

Progressive slots have lower rtps. Why is that?

If you’ve spent a fair amount of time browsing progressive slots to play, you may have noticed that lots of them offer large jackpots that don’t have as high an RTP. In fact, the figure may be in the low 90s or the high 80s. What’s behind this? Well, when a player triggers the jackpot, the slot will have to pay out a huge amount of money. This cash therefore has to be put aside over a long period of time in order to pay for that one lucky player’s huge win. As a result, the slot developer will achieve this by lowering the RTP so the money can be divided up in this way. In some ways, playing a progressive slot is like playing the lottery – and if you want to get more involved in the actual gameplay behind slots, it may be better to look for a non-progressive with a higher RTP.

What should I consider when choosing a new slot?

Bear in mind that choosing a slot with a higher RTP is not a strategy that will guarantee larger wins. If you want to benefit from a long term gambling strategy, then the higher RTP games are definitely advised. Other factors can of course go into a decision, such as choosing a video slot because it appeals to you visually, or because it’s a branded theme of a movie or TV series you love. Overall, though, if you want to win back as much money as possible while also being in with the chance of landing that big win, go for as high an RTP as possible.

How does RTP impact bonus value?

It’s often the case that a casino bonus will involve playing on slot machines, and the wagering requirements are often lowest for this type of game if you encounter a bonus which has different requirements for different kinds. What many people may not know is that the value of a casino bonus can be impacted by the slots you choose to play, along with their RTP. If you want to improve your chances of winning and completing the bonus wagering requirements, your best bet is to go with slots that have a higher RTP percentage. Whenever you go to claim a casino bonus, make sure you read the terms and conditions included in the small print. This is especially useful when it comes to evaluating the value of your bonus in relation to slots. Some operators will lessen the value of, or even ban, play on certain slots, with the reasoning being that they have an RTP which is higher than average. There is a way to work out how to gain an advantage over the casino, though – essentially, you would need to follow a formula whereby the wagering requirements are balanced against the RTP. If you have a bonus with a wagering requirement of 30x, your advantage can be obtained by playing slots which have an RTP of roughly 96.7% or higher. If the wagering requirement is 40x, then the RTP will need to be higher to compensate – in other words, around 97.5% or higher if you want to maintain this advantage.

How RTP rates work - the specifics

Don’t forget that, when you’re considering an RTP percentage, this is connected to the portion of money which is paid back to players over a long period of time. It isn’t an instantly applicable number, and won’t work over a single bet. This may result in slot RTP rates not looking as attractive, but remember that anything can happen in the short term, so you need to focus on this possibility as well as the long term return average.

How to think of RTP rates

If you want to decide which slots are the most playable based on their RTP rate and no other factors, then it’s important to think in the long term. To keep playing over a more extensive timeframe, a good balance must be maintained. However, other criteria will affect a player’s likelihood of winning. For example, hit frequencies are often considered, and these are frequently confused with RTP rates.

Hit frequencies explained

It’s likely that the term hit frequencies isn’t new to you. Some people will mix them up with RTP rates, but this is incorrect as they are only a part of RTP rates. Many players will tell you that a slots game which displays its hit frequency is far more appealing than those which don’t. The difference between these two terms is as follows: RTP rates provide a theoretical percentage when it comes to the number of wagered stakes which will be paid out to players over the long term. Hit frequencies, on the other hand, will tell a player how often a winning spin will take place. As far as comparing the two, hit frequencies can be seen as more accurate when it comes to finding a game which will pay out on a regular basis.

On average, a slot machine will have a hit frequency rate between 9% and 25%. In other words, up to a quarter of spins will give you a win. This is part of the calculation behind RTP rate, but the hit frequency does not detail the size of these wins. To be more precise, they do not specify whether this win is a 1p win from a £1 bet, or a £500 win on a £1 bet. Both the likelihood of winning, and the amount you’re set to win each time, is subject to variance.

Slot Machine Slang - A Definitive Slots Glossary, slot game definition.

How does slot variance and volatility fit in?

It’s common for people to consider slot variance and volatility to be the same as RTP rates. However, they aren’t, and they are more similar to hit frequencies in that they are merely part of the calculation behind the slot RTP rate. In essence, variance or volatility refers to the likelihood of a player winning, and how much those winnings will be worth compared to your stakes.

This is where more in-depth analysis comes into play. At first glance, a slot machine with an RTP rate of 85% may seem less lucrative than one with 95%. However, add variance and volatility to the equation and you may just get a different result. A slot with a lower RTP rate may actually result in bigger wins for players.

The three types of variance are low, medium and high. With low variance slots, these will often have high RTP rates. Players will win more often over the long term, but the game will not pay out large sums of cash very often. While you can win on many spins – because the hit frequency rates are high – the amount you actually take away after each win isn’t that big. You may have guessed that high variance slots have the opposite effect. These slot machines have low RTP rates, and wins are not paid out often due to the hit frequencies being low. That being said, when a player does land a win, it’s well worth the wait. The strategy players typically attempt to follow is sustaining a large enough balance that they can deal with continually losing until that patch is over and they land a big win. With medium variant slots, these are the most common games you’ll find on online casino sites. The hit frequencies, RTP rates and prizes are mid-range, so there isn’t too much volatility either way. As these are a safe option, they are popular with gamblers across the globe.

A similar term is slot volatility, and this refers to the amount of risk there is involved with a slot. All this means is that low variance slots have low volatility, medium variance slots are subject to medium volatility and high variance slots are highly volatile. Another phrase which may have come out is ‘high paying slots’. However, this concept doesn’t exist. A player may be lucky enough to win a good amount of money on a slot game and recommend it to a friend, but it doesn’t then follow that the friend will have a similar experience. The best strategy is to avoid any slots which are described as high paying, and instead seek out those which have low or high variance and volatility, according to your playing preferences.

Top facts about RTP

  • If you’re playing a slot which is part of a franchise or big name, it will be more likely to have a low RTP rate. This is because game developers have to pay a lot of money to use the name and images from well-known titles such as marvel, jurassic park and the terminator. To compensate, the player ends up footing the bill for this cost over time via the lower RTP rate.

  • Higher paying slots come from providers like thunderkick, netent and microgaming. Those from playtech, ballys, yggdrasil, nextgen or WMS don’t have the same levels of payout.

  • Progressive slots will generally have the lowest RTP percentage, and to be precise, this will be around 10% lower than most of the highest paying games out there. To obtain decent slots gaming, avoid these types of games.

  • If the progressive slot is at an all-time high, or you are playing with bonus money, it can still be in your favour to play these games despite the lower RTP rate.

  • Choosing one of the best RTP slots to play is something most people do without thinking. They pick one based on their preferred casino site, the theme, the bonus features, or the overall gameplay. Very few players research the details, and that means that there’s a very important aspect that’s often overlooked. Most people forget to research how much the best rtp slots gives back to the player. The RTP, or return to player, is most often seen as a percentage. It tells you how big of a percentage the slot will pay back to the players. So if the slots have an RTP of 90%, then it will pay out £90 of every £100 to the players in various wins.

  • Looking for a slot machine in online casinos with a high return to player doesn’t mean that the other reasons for choosing a slot should be forgotten either. You can find RTP slots with the highest payout-rates, and impressive graphics, sounds and themes. Here are some of the best returns to player slot machines.

RTP refers to the amount of money a player will get back from a slots game over time. However, there is a difference between theoretical and actual RTP. Furthermore, this term isn’t to be confused with hit frequencies or slot variance and volatility. These terms only form part of the overall RTP calculation. Hit frequencies are used more often by players as an indicator of how likely they are to win, but this figure doesn’t go into specifics.

Casino sites have a duty to constantly monitor the performance of their game RTP rates to ensure the house edge doesn’t gradually increase too much in their advantage. Due to factors such as volatility, the margin may vary slightly month on month, but should slowly edge towards the original RTP stated to be within the blueprint of the game. Progressive jackpots will have a lower RTP than non progressives, but there are particular circumstances where they can be well worth playing.

Starburst slot by netent (98.5% RTP)

Netent has been providing some of the best slots for years and starburst slot is no different. Bearing a return to player rate of 96.1% it’s one of the slots with big jackpots. The game feels like playing in an arcade but its amazing earning potential and high RTP will make you take it very seriously.

In starburst, when you hit a wild it may give you up to three re-spins and with a little luck, over £50,000! The design is beautiful, the soundtrack is mesmerizing but in the end, with an RTP that high, it rarely matters.

Free slots apps

This is our collection of free slots apps reviewed by our staff. These are apps that are available as a completely free app or as a free trial app at either the google play app store or the itunes app store. We give our readers an idea of what they can expect from the slot app and cover important information such as in-app game purchases, recent updates, and planned updates. Often we find that even though an app is getting high reviews and great remarks at either of the app stores, the information often does not line up to the actual gameplay and overall experience with the app. We are really glad you found our site because we want our readers to get unbiased casino reviews and the best slots experience online.

We love games. Actually, we really love great games where a developer has put thought into the experience of the app user. Factors such as graphics of high-quality, high re-playability, excellent code that doesn't show too much repetition. As any slot player knows, when you spin the reels of a game long enough, you actually do start to see patterns in the behavior of the game.

Good coders are able to tweak this effect so that patterns are either less obvious or prolonged by better bonus rounds. We pay close attention to RNG when scrutinizing the code. In our reviews of free slot apps, we also determine if the free game requires an in-game purchase. We ask if the game is designed to give unlimited fun and free play or if it is fixed to where a player has to make a purchase to continue gaming.

The best online casino mobile slots

Random number generation is a super important aspect of an app game. Because there is little – actually none that we can think of, regulation for random number generation verification for app games, it makes them open to a lot of speculation. Even though these are not real money wagers being placed in-app, they can represent actual real money being spent to stay in the game.

Those that partake in acquiring slot apps in-game coins should be aware that there will never be a real money return for the purchase. The only entertainment is returned whether the randomization of the game is fair or not. It seems to stand, that the larger gaming companies should have stronger ethics in their stance on fairplay because they have more to lose than smaller companies. Some of the top companies – namely zynga, do appear to be more reliable and trustworthy.

When it comes down to it, it is the responsibility of the app playing public to keep others aware of any misdealings in the apps that they play. Even though itunes / apple and google are working towards creating a safer gaming environment, it is not entirely their responsibility to keep bad apps out of their marketplace.

Free slots online app for iphones and ipads on ios 5.0 and up

A free slots online app is the same as other online slot games. Both types of slot games are playable for free but with some apps, there is an in-game requirement to pay to continue. The slot games that we have on our site do not require money ever.

The slot graphics are good, and the app itself is user-friendly. Although the free credits are not ever ending. The in-app purchases aren't too expensive and are a good value if you enjoy playing for long periods of time.

Free slots online app features

There are other features that make free slots online app a little different from the rest. The in-app music player is a pretty cool feature and you can control the volume so it does not interrupt or draw attention.

The games have an auto spin feature, which is unique for a free slots app game. Levels are reached by spinning and it seems you level up at a faster rate if you're spinning and winning. Each level gets a little more difficult to reach and free slots online offers bigger rewards for reaching higher levels.

Additional features include a leaderboard and the ability to connect to facebook and twitter.

The newest release fixed the major bugs and it runs pretty much flawlessly even if you have several apps running. Developer geaxgame inc has several other casino-style games and apparently, they know what they are doing when it comes to developing great games with nice features. Support for this free slots online app is really good as the crew responds with the help needed for any issues that one may have.

Free slots online app by geaxgame inc is highly rated on itunes, nearly 4 stars and seems to be addicting according to the several reviews.

Because these games are simulations of gambling and slot machines, it is important to remember that these apps can be just as addictive as real gambling. So play responsibly even when its just free slot apps.

Free slot apps enjoy the vegas experience

We all want to go to vegas to enjoy the best gambling experience and adventure of our lives. On the other hand, we have no time to travel all of the ways to vegas and let’s be honest, we don’t have that much to spare. Players can get to enjoy the most authentic gambling experience and rack up on great rewards without having to spend a lot of money, or time to physically fly to las vegas.

The app achieves that by offering players a wide selection of slot machines that can enjoy at any time and anywhere. The app is home to plenty of different slot machines that come with all kinds of themes. The one thing that all of these slots have in common is their ability to provide players with an amazing slot gaming experience that will make them feel like they are in the biggest halls of the largest casinos in the las vegas strip. The different slots also come with a variety of features that players will get to trigger during the gameplay. These features include wilds that can substitute for other icons, as well as scatter icons that can give scattered rewards to lucky players. These scatters usually trigger another bonus feature, which is the free spins round. Other special features include second screen bonus rounds like the bonus wheels or the pick me bonuses to mention a few.

Slot odds, variance and volatility

The house edge, RTP and the risk

Best slots sites

Slots odds, house edge & RTP

The odds of you winning on a slot are usually represented in a machine by what casino game software developers like to call ‘the return to player rate’; otherwise known as the RTP

You’ll see something like this: expected RTP 95%.

Another way of looking at it, and what you’ll read in other places, is: house edge 5%.

What they are basically saying is the same thing but in reverse. In one you are specifying how much a video slot machine is expected to give back to the players, on the other you are saying how much of the money the machine gives back to the mobile casinos online.

We prefer to talk about RTP because it’s what is clearly marked out on the online mobile slots we’ve played. So it avoids confusion when you see it.

You can think of it like this: for every 1 coin (dollar, GBP, euro) you put into the machine, the slot machine is going to give out 95 cents/pennies back to the player.

The RTP is calculated over the entire lifetime of the slot machine over millions of spins.

Of course if it was as simple as that, it wouldn’t really be gambling, it would be paying 5 cents for a spin. That’s because the RTP is calculated over the entire lifetime of the slot machine over millions of spins. It works on averages. When you win €1.90, you are getting not just your 95 cents, but the 95 cents from another player who didn’t win on their spin.

It simply means that all in all, over time, the machine is going to give out to the casino 5 cents for every coin put it. Sometimes the machine will pay out huge amounts and the casino will be down, but it will average out in the long run.

Look for machines with high return to player rate.

So on this basis, it doesn’t take a genius to figure out that you should head for the slot machines with the higher return to player rate.

Generally, anything over 95% is great, 96% and 97% is even better. Less than 90% and you should generally avoid. Those machines are so tight they ask their mothers to pay for a drink of tap water in their own homes.

A good return to player rate (RTP) is anything over 95%. The higher the better.

Higher payout rates don’t always mean better however. Variance plays a very important factor in how often the machine will pay out.

A machine with 97% payout rate, but low variance, will give you tiny little wins often. A machine with 94% RTP rate but high variance will take patience, but you can win hundreds of thousands for your troubles.

Luckymobileslots.Com has over 1000 reviews of all the mobile slots and gives out variance and payout information. Mobile slots reviews »

You need to do your research. Luckymobileslots.Com is the best place to find all the information on all the mobile slots machines new and old and what you can expect from each.

Generally, the higher the payout, the better. It’s a great starting slot strategy.

What is slot variance? What is slot volatility?

Variance and volatility are one and the same thing. Two terms one meaning; how risky is this slot machine?

Basically the volatility of a slot is directly related to how often and how much it pays out. Another way of looking at it is that volatility = risk. High volatility means high risk, low volatility means low risk.

Not many casino slot game providers like to publish this information. Sometimes it’s obvious and sometimes it’s not. But depending on the type of player, you might be more or less attracted to one type of slot machine over the other.

There is no right or wrong answer; different players will enjoy different types of mobile slots. You might even find a new favourite game and it might be a variance you had not expected.

Most of the time, you just have to spin to find out if this slot machine is the one for you, is it entertaining and is it fun to play?

When should I play low variance slots?

Low variance is all about entertainment. This slot game will pop, sizzle, spark. It will give you lots of little wins, and often. What it won’t do is give you a big life changing win at 400x your bet.

Great lower variance slots?

Foxin wins, starburst, mermaids millions.Find them all at:

You should play low variance slots when:

  • You just want to be entertained

  • You don’t have a large bankroll

  • You want your game play to last for as long as possible

  • You want to try and walk away from the mobile casino on the positive rather than negative

  • You want lots of actions, bonus features and everything coming at you at once! Entertain me slot!

Of course low variance slots don’t always pay out small, some have even the chance to win progressive jackpots or as much as 80 or 100 times your original bet. But a low variance slot is low risk for a reason. It’s there to help you make your budget last as long as possible and possibly even walk away with a little 20% extra on top.

For beginners and those who just want entertainment, we recommend low variance mobile slots.

When should I play high variance slots?

High variance slots are all about that great big win in the sky. You know. That moment when you see those 5 in a row line up and you hit a multiplier, on a free spin round, with a random instant prize bonus game and suddenly you see the big letters… BIG WIN… flash before your eyes.

But uninitiated players beware; these slots are high risk for a reason.

Great higher variance slots?

Treasures of troy, dead or alive, 300 sheilds, gonzo’s quest.Find them all at:

You should play high variance slots when:

  • You have the cash to spare

  • You are chasing huge wins and nothing but 500x your bet will satisfy you

  • You don’t mind walking away once you’ve spent your budget

  • You don’t mind not getting a lot of action and are happy to wait for the bonus features to hit, safe in the knowledge that when those winning combinations show up… you’ll be one happy mother clucker. (yes we changed that word on purpose. This may be an over 18 website but we have manners.)

There is no doubt that if you are not willing to be in for the long haul with high variance games, you’ll walk out with less than you come in.

The only possibly winning strategy when playing high volatility games is to check your budget and figure how much you would need to spend for about 150 to 300 spins. If your budget allows that, then you have a chance to walk out a happy gambler, or at least, not a poorer one.

How can I tell the variance or volatility of a slot?

Unless we are told by the casino game software (and which we put on luckymobileslots.Com) the only way to really get a feel for the variance of the video slot is to play.

If however, this answer doesn’t satisfy you, there is another ‘indicator’ or ‘hint’ that you can use to ‘guestimate’ the variance of a slot.

When in doubt

Free play the mobile slot first and get a feel for it before you play with real money.

But just in case you hold us accountable, ‘’, means that this mantra is not set in stone, it is just a guideline. A lot depends on how many symbols, reels, in-game or progressive jackpots and paylines you have in the slot machine.

Check out the paytable

First things first. If the slot has something like ‘win a million trillion coins!!’ written on it, chances are it’s at least medium to high volatility.

The higher the maximum win, the more chance this slot will take it’s sweet time giving it to you in the base game or bonus games.

Secondly, look at the difference between what you will win when you get 4 of a kind in comparison to 5 of a kind symbol wins.

If the difference is only about 3x to 5x more, you are probably looking at a lower volatility slot like starburst. If, however, the difference is more 10 or 15 times than the 4 of a kind win, then you might be looking at a high variance slot like WMS raging rhino.

What next? Comfortable with how to manage the risks, bet within your budget and the types of slots available? Do you think you’ll be able to recognise the bonus features and styles of slots? Then it’s time to find a mobile casino to play at. Check out our list below of mobile casinos that offer video and classic mobile slot to play on your mobile.
